  • Did anyone notice?

    Late last nite during the rally it seemed like the guys played loose, attacked and played to indivdual strengths. Less thinking more just going on natural ability. Almost simple and stoopid.....no one was looking to the bench with a what set or play should we be running....no one looked at the bench scared I just goofed up again...they just went after it.

    Just wondering if we need less basketball plays and just more basketball IF that makes any sense.

    Just asking beucase what I saw for the final 4 minutes was NOT what I saw for the first 36......

    Was it just panic with some luck...was SIU playing not to lose vs trying to win that many teams do.

    Again...I dunno...just asking.

    The stream was cut off for the final 5 minutes or so. Whatever I saw last night, there was little positive. I wish I'd seen the last 4 minutes, as we scored 23 points and must have had some offensive success.
    Let's see...
    First 36 minutes ---> 41 pts
    Last 4 minutes ---> 23 pts

    B.t.w. - how did we score in the last 4 minutes? A lot of F.T.'s? good shots? garbage buckets? Not sure. But DSE ended up with 18 and I don't think he was at double-digits at the 4-min. mark.

      I think the success we had scoring in the last 4 minutes of the game was largely the result of SIU going into the basketball equivalent of a "prevent defense".

      DSE and Lemon made nice, aggressive 1-on-1 moves to get into the paint and score during that stretch...I'm not trying to take anything away from them...but SIU was playing with the lead at that point, and they were far more concerned with not fouling us and not giving up 3s than actually doing anything to stop the penetration...

      I would venture a guess that if we tried to spread the floor and had Lemon and DSE put their heads down and get to the rim in the early portions of the game, there would be 2 or 3 guys waiting there to take a charge every time they got into the lane...I doubt we'd have much success with that approach in situations where the other team didn't go into a prevent defense mode...

      I've always felt that the shortcoming of the Les offensive system is centered around the fact that it relies more on individuals being able to win 1-on-1 battles...and less on structured sets, motion, off the ball screens, etc. designed to get guys freed up for easy shots (even if player A on BU may not have the physical skills to win the 1 on 1 battle against the guy guarding him...).

      Just my two cents, though.

        .
        It looks like a dysfunctional offense to me. We don't seem to know what to do to get a basket. What's more frustrating is that other teams seem to know what we're going to know more than we do. Hence, the lack of open shots, ball pressure, rebounding effectiveness, etc.
        I've watched the likes of UIC, Northern CO, and E. Kentucky vs. Big Ten teams earlier this year, along with NIU (vs. BU) whose offenses seemed MUCH more fluid and effective than ours. Any of them going to the Big Dance this year?

          Bradley seemed to spread out the offense more which gave our guards more room to make drives to the basket, I wonder why we don"t do this more often as we do not have enough good outside shooters.

            We cut the lead to around 6 or so and actually had a chance to win.

            The reason we didn't win is the LACK OF ORGANIZED OFFENSE. no one was moving or anything and then we hit the wall. After this it was the ISO plays to WL and DSE

            Take out the drives to the basket in garbage time by WL and DSE and we had NOTHING.

            We can't pass it back and forth and occasionally put our head down and go to the basket......We cut it to 6 and then hit a wall.....once SIU went into hibernation on defense we scored some more....but there was nothing I saw that made me optimistic.

              I think it was more of SIU opening up the lane because they did not want to send us to the line with the clock stopped..earlier in the game, they never left a path open for a driving dunk..
