  • 3 MVC games today 12/23- one final

Drake beat Chicago State 102-51- Rayvonte Rice had 23 points and 7 rebounds and Ben Simons, who had played very little this year and scored only 30 points in Drake's previous 10 games, had 22 points and was 6-7 from three.
Evansville hosts Norfolk State at 7:05 pm CST.
New Mexico plays UNI in Las Vegas at 9:00 pm CST

I know Drake's got some ugly losses, and maybe they were trying to make up for it..but those numbers looked too suspicious --
Chicago State is bad and they had just been blown out at Iowa State Tuesday by 50...... so I had to check on some details & stats..

Rice had a nice game but he did play a team high 33 minutes in a terribly lopsided game, and took more shots and more 3-pt attempts than anyone on Drake.

In their own story on their web site they boast about how many 3-pointers they nailed..and how this is their biggest win since they whupped up on Waldorf in 2006...

The play-by-play shows Drake had a 30+ point lead even well before the 10 minute mark -- yet still chose to play much of those final 10 minutes with starters....Van Deest, Rice, Alexander, etc..

Even in the final 5-6 minutes of the game, when the score was a lopsided 92-49...
    Rice was still launching 3's...

He was finally taken out, when he hit a 3-pointer, then got a steal, and launched yet another 3-pt attempt SIX seconds into the new possession...then fouled 8 seconds later.

t....I think you might be reaching here. Drake's starters played less minutes against Chicago State than did Iowa State's starters when they played CSU on Tuesday.....and Iowa State was up 33 at halftime.....Drake was only up 12-13 with 15 minutes to go in the game.

Also, Drake was down to only 5 available players at the 1, 2 and 3 positions, so that's only 2 reserves for the 3 spots....one of the starters had to be in there by default. Only 2 starters played more than 22 minutes for DU, and the only reason Van Deest was in at all in the last 10 minutes was to give a breather to a walk-on who had been out there for a while without a rest...and even then, Van Deest only came back in for about a minute.

Drake has as many players available as anyone in the Valley, they appear to have 16 rostered players, and if there was ever a game to get your starters out in the final 10 minutes, this was it...
Note what happened when Northwestern was still playing their starters with a 30 pt lead against Mt/ St. Mary's

But....3 players out with injury, 1 player redshirting, 1 player just coming back from a broken elbow having missed the last 8 games....and it's really only 11 players available. All of them played. Most of them played a lot. The only guy who got less than 8 minutes was a walk-on who is in his 3rd year at Drake, and this was his first game action ever.

Starters averaged less than 24 minutes each. You make it sound like Drake had the entire starting lineup out there in the last 10 minutes, and that's not the case. Due to numbers, it was difficult to find a realistic line-up that didn't include at least one starter. When you start putting guys at positions that they've never practiced at, that's when you have guys running into each other and injuring themselves.

I just wish BU could leave their starters in a game too long and win by 30+ sometime this season....

I wholeheartedly agree with you AZ BU Fan. I'd really like to see BU dismantle and embarrass a team. Any team. Just once.

As much as Drake sucks, BU will be toasted if Drake is hot with the 3's against us. Our perimeter D isn't very fast and that leads to many wide open 3's. Only time will tell I guess.
