  • BU Shooting

This has nothing to do with the Duke game. I thought BU did as well as they could have with what we had and what we were up against.

However, after watching just about every minute of the season that I could, so far, something about BU's shooting keeps sticking out to me.

This is the worst shooting team I can ever remember watching.

Yes, I realize we are short 2 potential starters for the rest of the season, but it's hard to fathom how many wide open jumpers, layups, and free throws we have missed.

So, I went back and looked at the stats available on the BU website.

    BU Shooting-
    10-11 38.1% field 33.1% threes 67.6% ft
    09-10 43.9% field 35.6% threes 74.4% ft
    08-09 44.0% field 32.8% threes 71.9% ft
    07-08 44.1% field 37.4% threes 74.4% ft
    06-07 45.9% field 42.0% threes 67.8% ft
    05-06 43.9% field 33.6% threes 71.8% ft
    04-05 43.3% field 32.1% threes 71.1% ft
    03-04 40.4% field 32.8% threes 72.5% ft
    02-03 44.2% field 36.4% threes 70.3% ft

This year's team is, by far, the lowest FG% team in recent BU history. It also is the lowest FT% team. 3-point-wise this team is the 4th worst of recent teams.

Over the previous 8 seasons BU has averaged: 43.7%/field, 35.3%/3pt, and 71.8%/ft line. BU is sitting 5.6 points lower from the field, 2.2 points lower from 3, and 4.2 points lower from the FT line this season.

These are pretty striking numbers IMO.

With arguably our two best players out for the season, do you really expect us to light it up? And you do realize it's 9 games into the season right? We're not even a third of the way there.
This is just the tip of the iceberg...

So far, this is a trend, but I think that this goes back to the type of guards we are recruiting.

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

I saw the stats posted by BradleyJD and I went...WOW!
Reminded of our injury problems, and went...Oh NO
Realized we have time to improve those numbers (only 9 games into the season) and went...Whew

Of course these reactions I had were nowhere near as serious & emphatic as yours Dogsrus! Guess in the end, there has been no shooting at BU this year either way you look at it.

I realize we have 2 guys out, although Sam's numbers from his games are included.

How does having 2 starters out change make D-1 college players miss free throws?

Do you want to start the tread titled rebounding?

speaking of shooting...my shooting % took a dive a few years back when we played the TEAM at the work release center out by Hanna City....

my 1st shot from the baseline went completely over the rim....

thinking if I was shooting at the Dukie rims it would have the same effect there...what an atmosphere....

I'll have to check the numbers, but yes, I believe losing two players who shoot a lot of free throws at a good percentage would draw down a team average FT %. I believe SM (for sure) and TB were among our top 3 or 4 FT shooters.

Okay, guess I am the only one who feels D-1 players should be able to make lay-ups and free throws.

Sometimes it's not that the guys are missing shots or free throws but it's HOW they are missing them...I've seen some real bricks thrown up there by guys who are sapposed to be our "good" shooters!

You would think that if you had a former runner-up in the NBA 3-point contest and a former player who led the nation in 3-point shot percentage sitting on your bench that they would be able to teach these guys some shooting fundementals.

Hopefully this is happening and we will some improvement as the season wears on.

One of the things that we need is for the team to undergo some Tom Izzo style rebounding and layup drills
