Anyone else watching the UNI-Iowa game? It is a low-scoring game, and has been close. Iowa now leads 37-34 with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

One thing that aggravates me is when announcers do not know the rules of the game. An incident just happened where Lucas O'Rear dribbled to the center line, but stopped his dribble just short of crossing into the frontcourt. One foot was over the line, while the other foot remained in the backcourt. He reached the ball across the line then brought it back. UNI called timeout to avoid a 10 second call, then Iowa coach Fran McCaffery argued for an over-and-back violation. The officials did not call it.
Wayne Larravee seemed to know that rule requires both feet and the ball to be in the front court, then for the ball or any part of the ball handler to touch the backcourt before the violation can be called. But the color guy, former Hawkeye Kenyon Murray, insisted that if the ball was held across the center line and brought back it was a violation. After the timeout, the announcers were corrected by the officials, and the color guy admitted he was wrong.
But this is one of the basic rules of basketball, and there are not that many rules. Networks like the Big Ten network should make these guys read and learn the rules before letting them get on the air.

          Iowa 51 UNI 39 Final

UNI scores 39 points against the worst Big Ten team. Ugh!

Eastern High beats Moore Traditional by a score of 50-47. Remy Abell had 12 points.

Davenport West beats Cedar Rapids Washington 58-55 despite Iowa commit Josh Oglesby scoring 30 points. Nate Wells had 11 points in the win. Huge win for Davenport West as Cedar Rapids Washington is supposed to be one of the stronger high school teams in Iowa

I'm a little concerned with Abell's and Well's scoring totals. Help on Offense is desperately needed for next season and these 2 are barely cracking 10 points in high school. What is their shooting totals or how good is their teammates?

Just a little concerned that players like McCain was scoring in the 20's-30's, Prosser was near the 20's, along with TCS. We know how McCain and TCS turned out and Prosser is having extreme offensive troubles as well.

I believe IUPUI commit Lyonell Gaines is actually the leading scorer on Eastern, and by quite a bit too. However, with 4 division one players on the roster, I wouldn't expect Abell to be scoring in the 20's. Would be nice to see a little boost in the scoring though. And you're right Da Coach, Wells' scoring is so far exceeding what everyone would expect, although a lot of it is coming from the free throw line.

And Jason, you need to remember Eddren McCain was putting up 20-30 points because he played in the smallest division in Louisiana against teams that were not very good. Abell and Wells are playing in the largest divisions in their respective states against pretty decent competition.

As of ranking on December 5th, Cedar Rapids Washington was ranked 9th in the state and Davenport West doesn't show on the radar. http://www.iowasportsconnection.com/...?article=19219

This Friday, West meets Bettendorf who lost handily to Cedar Rapids Washington last week (65-40). This will be a grudge match for Bettendorf as West quashed their hopes for a run to the last year's state tournament. Bettendorf was so sure that they'd sweep West aside that they already had hotel reservations and t-shirts made for their "obvious" trip to state.

Tonight's game was another tribute to Coach Bigler's goal of playing as a team not as a group of individuals. Wells was West's second highest scorer in this game.

The last time UNI scored less than 40 points in a game was when they lost at Bradley 80-39 in the 1999-2000 season!

OMG -- how fast the tables have turned......

seems I recall quite a few people right here, about 8-9 months ago -- when UNI was whupping Kansas...
saying woe is us, how come we can't recruit athletes, shooters, and the caliber of top players like Northern Iowa??
If you need the links I can supply them but I am not trying to call out anyone....

...just that a few short months ago -- some were saying our recruiting was terrible and pointing to UNI as the epitome of a team that despite being in the boondocks, was stiill able to recruit an endless stable of great athletes, great shooters, and great players.

Now guess what is the main topic among UNI panther fans??

                        ...
it's the overwhelming sense of realization that they have a truckload of unathletic bad shooters, and can't hit anything..plus the only guy they got who can even have an occasional good game is going to be gone next year.
One guy on their board says their BEST ATHLETE is Lucas O'Rear...a flat footed guy with an Australian-rules football build, who plays 25-30 minutes per game and whose numbers are in the David Collins range, but who never blocks a shot.

I know BU is hurting and I am not trying to say UNI is worse than us, only that it was wrong and pretty short sighted to point to their recruiting as all that much better considering where they are now......
..but at least we get a couple of our best athletes back next year and have a few really athletic young guys for our future, but UNI fans seem not to feel the same way...
Anyway -- this idea every few months by some that
--we need to recuit like UNI
--we need to recruit like ISU
--we need to recruit like SIU
--and even once I recall seeing that we need to recruit like UW-M and Loyola
..shows how short sighted those opinions are...those guys themselves would disagree!

Say what you want about Iowa being bad (and yes, I know they are bad), but they absolutely dominated the defensive side of the ball. They switched up their defense on nearly every possession and UNI spent the entire game trying to adjust.

I cannot believe that 11 of Jake Koch's 12 shots were from 3pt range. With O'Rear unable to score on anything except offensive rebound put-backs, I figured Koch would be spending most of his time in the paint. UNI is going to have a lot of trouble scoring this year unless they can develop some sort of inside game...Pehl looked like he had some potential, but only played a few mins.

The Iowa backcourt was simply too tall...all but 1 player on Iowa is 6'5+ and they kept taking the ball inside. All in all, despite UNI's offensive woes, I was really impressed with UNI's defense and dread playing them because they defend so well. Even when Iowa scored, it was usually on a contested shot.
