  • Kansas barely edges UCLA - controversial call

In the game last night at Kansas...UCLA was supposed to get blown out according to many analysts..
but they hung tough and almost beat Kansas on the Jayhawks' home court...

But two factors stood out to me...

-first - the refs bailed out Kansas several times, but most notably a gift call with a second left, game tied, that handed the game stright from the refs to Bill Self...

Watch the play for yourself...with 0.1 second left the ref calls a foul on a play where the Kansas player is totally out of control just launching a wild effort of a shot...
This is a NO CALL everywhere else in the known universe, but not at Kansas -- it's the tiny crack through which the refs can squeeze a Kansas win out of a loss.

also check the box score and see the big discrepancy in fouls and trips to the FT line, that Kansas got a big time benefit from...
There was once a day when UCLA got these calls...but now Kansas gets them......

-The 2nd thing was how the broadcasters worked for two hours as if the job title they held was..
"PR agent for Kansas, and in charge of making excuses for how they're almost getting beat at home by an unranked team"

at least 50 times the annaouncers offered excuses, alibis, and hyped the future debut of Josh Selby as if he is LeBron James...but keep in mind, he was not even ranked as highly by many as Harrison Barnes....who's floundering..

definitely seemed like a bad call. I wondered what that looked like when I read it in the paper today

I know I'd be livid at that point. Kind of sounded to me like they whistle was being blown before that "foul" happened. If you look the UCLA guy is turning to look at the ref as the Kansas player is grabbing the ball and well befor the shot.
Some see a hopeless end, while others see an endless hope.

A tough call, but if the foul was on #3, then I could see it. He did reach in on the play.

It probably should not have been called, but it was.

Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com said it well:

Truth is, you can see whatever you want to see in that replay. If you want it to be Lee fouling Little, it's there. If you want it to be two players making incidental contact while reaching for a loose ball, that's there, too. But regardless of what you see, the reality is that a referee blowing the whistle at that time with these stakes is a crummy way to have the outcome of a game decided, and it ruined an otherwise terrific night.
