I think it's actually just a step towards the Big East pushing out the basketball only schools.

This is a win-win for TCU and the BE. The Big East is far well-known as a basketball conference than a football conference overall, but having TCU can maybe raise the profile in that regard. They certainly can't lean on Notre Dame for that.
It's kinda like South Florida. They are not in the BE for their powerhouse basketball program...
Having said that, I still have a feeling that the sports media down there (and maybe people who live down there can help me out here) will still focus on the Big 12.

A couple examples:
Every year, Syracuse is taking $2.5 million less home each year than they did before the Big East went to 16 teams. They might easily go elsewhere, leaving a potential spot for a basketball only member.
Seton Hall is already at odds with league membership because their annual budget is at about 15% less than what the league recommends as a minimum. So there has been some speculation they will go to the A10 once they feel they are no longer able to compete and pay its bills.

There is so much TV and NCAA basketball money flowing into the Big East now, that I don't see any of it's current members leaving voluntarily.
DePaul is the best example- they should never have joined in the first place, but they are making way too much money to drop out.

Maybe they will have to rename the conference for all the true easterners out there....Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
