  • Trivia question for a prize...

    Same prize as the pick-ems...
Cash certificate for free food at local restaurants......

DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS OPENLY -- YOU MUST PM THEM TO ME
(send me the answers by private message...if you have never sent a private message or don't know how, just click on my name "tornado"
next to my avatar picture of Remy Abell, then select the 2nd option of sending me a private message)

I want the winner to have to come up with all four answers on his own -- not see three of them that are supplied by someone else.

Here's the question and I am intentionally leaving it a bit vague but this is one that the old timers will have a little advantage...

You have to get all FOUR parts right...

    1) there used to be a popular restaurant at the bottom of the hill just beyond lower Bradley Park -- from the 1940's through the 1980's Bradley students loved the place -- it was walking distance from BU's campus -- name the restaurant.

    2) In the middle of the Joe Stowell era -- BU head coach Joe Stowell gave a campus tour and hosted a campus visit with one of the top high school basketball players in the NATION.
Then Coach Stowell took the player to the above restaurant, where a number of BU students there spontaneously cheered and rallied aorund the kid causing a legendary event that so impressed the young recruit that he decided on the spot that Bradley was the best campus he had seen yet and he softly committed to play at Bradley but he still had one other campus to visit -- one where it was considered extremely unlikely to go....
    ......name this player.

    3) unfortunately after he made his final visit -- he chose not to come to BU, where did he end up going?

    4) Where is this player now?

Darn it T, I know the story but can't remember the player's name!
      Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

PM a guess....if nobody has it in an hour or so -- I'll give more hints..

recrutis weren't ranked back then but he would have been the highest rated kid BU ever landed and would have put BU back in the news.. one way or another..

thanks for your guesses..but nobody has it right yet --
this never got much press because, of course, we didn't land the kid --it was one of our near misses, but I saw the kid that night at the restaurant so I know this story to be true...and had the kid come to BU instead of where he did go -- I believe his life would have been far better...

If you see how Bradley and our community treated their Black athletes in that era -- guys like Bobby Joe Mason, Chet, Joe Strawder, etc...they were treated fairly and all ended up fine men with great careers...

In just a bit I will give another hint that'll probably give enough for everyone to go on and find the answer...

Not a good hint. That could be every school in the SEC.

well -- I'll give it to ya -- even tho you didn't clarify for sure where he is today...

but your answers were right on the dime..
you may have seen Tom Payne at breakfast but Coach Stowell took him down to Hunts that evening...and he acted like he was coming to BU..

                    So-
                    the trivia answers are:
                    Hunts Restaurant
                    Tom Payne
University of Kentucky where there had never been a Black player before and where at UK, and in the SEC, Payne faced harsh racism and his life and habits slid...
he has had a rough life and is currently in proson..

                    Here's update..

Can I change my answer to "Who is someone who has never been in my kitchen"? I would have been closer to the correct answer!
