SIU playing on ESPN- SIU loses to Northeastern in OT
SIU was not match for the Illini the other night after the 1st 10 minutes.
However, I can see this team coming together and could take the #7 spot in the Valley. I think Lowery's boys will be more responsive and carry out the game plan better than in last couple seasons. Hopefully they'll get a few wins in the non-conf. to boost the Valley.
Northeastern has made a nice comeback -- finally hitting some shots, esp. a couple 3's, and now with 7 minutes to go, SIU trails 49-47
--SIU with 20 turnovers already -- and their game plan seems to actually be to use Crowder, Bocot, and Freeman occasionally as point guards and have them bring the ball up court...but they have 2, 3, and 4 turnovers respectively...not a good idea.
What happened at the end? I was following it on gametracker and it says it was tied with 0:02 seconds left in OT and there was a technical foul on Mamadou Seck of SIU

Refs saw a phantom timeout when SIU didn't have one left. Looked bogus . . . announcers agreed no one from SIU looked like he was calling a TO. SIU might have been robbed there.

That is not true...I watched the game. The announcers indicated that it appeared that player #2 asked for..or gave a verbal indication that a timeout was wanted. The body language of the 2 or 3 players involved in getting the rebound clearly suggests that a timeout was wanted by 1 or more of the players.
in the post game press conf. Chris Lowery did not want to address the issue of the time out but instead cited the many turnovers as the main reason they lost...
but several fans who saw the game posted on the SIU message boards - conflicting opinions...
some saying it appeared at least one player (Seck or Brown-Surles) asked for the TO --
while other fans insist that after the time out was called, none of the refs could identify who called it and claimed they simply had "heard" what they thought was a request for a TO...thus believing SIU was jobbed by the refs..
We might never know........but...
The official scoring - and play-by-play assess the request for the time out to Mamadou Seck at 0:02 left in the OT period.
..then a technical foul with the Northeastern player hitting one of two FT's with only 0:02 left on the clock.
Add this to a growing list of "bad" Valley losses along with the trees losing to E. Kentucky...ouch.
We're starting out very poorly as a conference so far. It's still early though - just can't make a habit of losing games we should win.
CU winning by 4 vs. Northern Arizona scares me.

Dude settle down. It was a very questionable call. The announcers REPEATEDLY said they didn't see anyone from SIU signal for a TO. Did some player verbally ask for one? Neither you nor I will ever know. Could have been a bad call, but that's what happens when you let a team hang around too long.
I had the game taped since I was able to play Kellogg golf course this morning, it appears as no. 3 must have verbally called for the time-out as when the official was calling it you see no. 3 give the t sign which came right after it was granted.
Northeastern played a 2-3 match up zone and SIU had a lot of trouble getting good shots.
I use to think that man to man defense was the best way to go but with our lack of inside experience I sure wish we would protect our players more by playing more zone , Syracuse and W.Virginia have both been very successful playing the 2-3 zone, lets face it we have a better chance at making the opposing teams shoot from the outside which in turn gives our smaller guys a better chance to rebound then letting teams get the ball inside on us, there are not that many great shooters in the Valley and you only need to make sure you stay on the ones that are good.
Only once in six years has SIU even lost one of their first two games...
but now they have lost both of their first two games of a season for the first time since the last millennium!
