  • Kyle Korver- NBA good guy

A lot of pro athletes give back to their communities with their time and money, but Kyle Korver is one or the truly good guys in professional sports.

ComcastSportsnet will show a half-hour special on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm (preceeding the Bulls game at San Antonio at 8:30 pm CST).
It will profile Kyle and his charitable efforts in Chicago and elsewhere.

Is this part of NBA Cares by any chance?

I take no offense to the NBA Cares initiative that the league has put in place, especially to clean up the reputation of the league, but it seems like the charitable acts that the players do nowadays is more like a job.

That is, they are forced to be charitable. To me, charity is doing what you feel is good at your own will. You may not get the photo opportunities if an NBA player decides to volunteer at a soup kitchen, but then again don't they get enough on the court?

Then again, outside of Stan Van Gundy, I haven't heard too many folks from the NBA complaining about working Christmas...

If there are two players that come to mind as being charitable on their accord, it is Manute Bol and Dikebe Mutombo. While they were not to the superstar status of their contemporaries during their playing careers, they spent a hell of a lot of time helping their homelands, setting up basketball leagues with equal access and helping to build hospitals in their improvised homelands.

And I realize one of those players became an NBA good-will ambassador, but even when they retired they still continued to perform community service.
