Hope this is helpful as a longtime Springfield resident. Excited about the tournament and hope a lot of you come out for it.
Hotels
Sheraton and Marriott downtown are best options. Marriott probably a little nicer and little more upgraded, but Sheraton works just fine too. Marriott has a good sports bar/restaurant right in it too, Currents.
Hilton Garden inn by the Hall of Fame is fine too, but keep in mind not a great walk to the games. The other two are right there.
If you like the bed and breakfast types, there's a place called Naomi's Inn that is small and very nice....but you'll have to drive to the games and downtown....its near the Baystate Hospital.
Food (All of this walking distance to MassMutual Center)
Theodore's - Worthington Street, BBQ and Blues place...great place for a beer but also good sit down barbeque food too.
JT's - closest place to the arena. More of a sports bar, always popular with visiting teams. OK bar food.
Red Rose - Main Street, old style family italian, great pizza, big restaurant, a springfield legend
McCaffery's- Near Red Rose, Irish bar with decent food and a sit down restaurant area
Hot Table - great local panini place, but if you are only here on Sat-Sun your only chance would be Saturday for lunch. Otherwise they close for the weekend. Right near Marriott and Sheraton at Main Street/Tower Square.
The Fort/Student Prince - Fort Street - Probably Springfield's most famous restaurant, German Food, huge selection of beers. Was recently named one of the top 20 restaurants in the country to visit
Adolpho's - Worthington Street, upscale Italian, new place, themed after old school mafia-types.
350 Grill - Worthington Street - attached to the biggest strip club (Mardi Gras), but even if you aren't into the jugs, the restaurant is separate from that and attracts good crowds.
Worthington Street is where all the bars are...if you are looking for late night activities with lots of college kids, there you go.
HOF restaurants - Again, you can walk from downtown to the Hall of Fame, it's just not the shortest or pleasant walk (have to cross under a highway). But Max's Tavern is the most popular restaurant down there (and most expensive). Pazzo's is OK italian, and Uno's is down there too. ONYX is the trendy new kid on the block, kind of glitzy upscale dinner/nightclub.
Other stuff
Hall of Fame is an obvious one...they've done a nice job with it. You'll see the giant EPCOT like basketball when you drive into the city.
Some great museums at the Museum Quadrangle....a new Springfield History Museum is very cool, centered around Springfield's history as the home of Indian Motorcycles. Quadrangle also has a Science Museum and Art Museum and the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden (Dr. Seuss was born here).
The nations first Armory was in Springfield, so there's a national Armory museum. If you like old guns, there are lots of them there!
Barenaked Ladies play Symphony Hall on Friday night the 19th, if you happen to be in town then.....right next to the Sheraton Hotel.
Hope this helps!
