  • Lineup/Minutes Thoughts after Red/White

After an almost conversation with T in the thread for the Red/White scrimmage I decided to update my minutes by player and position projections based on what I saw at the Red/White. They are below. I posted the same on my blog along with some more observations/discussion.

    2/SG - Dodie Dunson (25), Dyricus Simms-Edwards (5), Jake Eastman (5), Andrew Warren (5)
    3/SF - Andrew Warren (25), Taylor Brown (10), Jake Eastman (5)
    4/PF - Taylor Brown (20), Jordan Prosser (15), Will Egolf (5)
    5/C - Will Egolf (20), Anthony Thompson (15), Jordan Prosser (5)

    Sam Maniscalco - 30 minutes
    Andrew Warren - 30 minutes
    Taylor Brown - 30 minutes
    Dodie Dunson - 25 minutes
    Will Egolf - 25 minutes
    Jordan Prosser - 20 minutes
    Dyricus Simms-Edwards - 15 minutes
    Anthony Thompson - 15 minutes
    Jake Eastman - 10 minutes
No minutes: Andrew Davis, Walt Lemon, Jr., Milos Knezevic, and the walk-ons.

I can't see WLJr. getting "no" minutes....

I would like to see AT/JP do it at the 5 so will can play the 4.....who knows.....all we have seen is a scrimmage....we don't know anything else about anything.

I think that this starting lineup offers more possibilities for substitution and for wins!

      1. SM
      2. AW
      3. TB
      4. WE
      5. JP

Yeah, I can't either, as far as Walt Lemon goes... But if I imagine an ideal game, I just don't see minutes for him ahead of the guys who are getting minutes at guard positions.

To me, the guard minutes are insignificant. We have a deep, experienced backcourt with size, skill, and strength. I'd say our shooting is fairly average, but again we know what we get with these guys. I don't think anyone would call the backcourt a weakness last year or this year. To reach our ceiling, AT and JP are going to have to play major roles and log significant minutes. Otherwise we're gonna small-ball ourselves to another 4-5 game at 2:30 in St. Louis.

I don't know about Eastman and AT. It would be great if AT could play 15 minutes. I would also like to see TB with more minutes. I felt he was underused last year. SM will likely be closer to 40 than 30 if healthy. I really liked Milos' potential last year, but he didn't look good (poor passing).

If JP or AT can split time at C, the team should do well IMO. The guards look deep and even the walk-ons have potential.
JL are not respunsible foor the string of injunrys....

Unbekannt, agree on the minutes actually. I didn't want to post up the whole blog post (because it was pretty long) but one of the assumptions is that I was talking in terms of ideal minutes. So, I expect AW, TB, and SM to log more than 30 mpg, but if things were going right and you were winning games by a comfortable margin, you'd like to see those guys playing fewer minutes to keep them fresh and healthy.

If we can get 15 minutes from AT that will be great! TB will not see any minutes at the 3. All his minutes will be logged in at the 4 book it! Unless JL has changed his philosophy I'd be shocked to see anything else. WE playing the 4 would not shock me if AT and JP can really play meaningful minutes.

                    SFP-
I've been holding out hope SFP for some time that it isn't really Les' preference to play so small, but just that he hasn't had good enough talent to justify more minutes out of the bigs.

So, uh, here's to hoping I'm right and these guys are good enough to push TB to the 3 for a big lineup at least some of the time. It's really impossible to say right now after seeing an intrasquad scrimmage.

My thinking on the this lineup is that we can switch from large to small to throw some teams off during a game. They would have to match up to our different style(s) rather than us match up to them.

The if healthy is a big concern for me regarding SM, he has had and still is hampered by that nagging ankle injury for like 2 years now. I would rather try to keep him closer to 25 minutes a game and get DSE more minutes, and get WL in there at least for a couple short stretches each half, even if he plays only 2-3 minutes a game. SM had to play more in the past due to injuries to other people, and EM being ineffective on the court. Now that we have good depth I would rather see less of a full strength SM, able to give it his all and not be slowed down, than see him out there pushing an injury when guys like DSE and DD have shown they can run the point.
I think DSE could be our best player on this team right now, I want to see him earn, and be rewarded with minutes.

Not a chance, even if completely healthy, or partially injured SM plays less than 30 (nor would I want him too )

Would be great if Walter Lemon Jr and Andrew Davis accept redshirt status this coming season. BU shouldn't need much from them this year. If necessary, can always yank the RS status later in the season just like last year with JE. Why burn up a year of eligibility if they won't see minutes?
