    Sunbelt Conference to improve their chances with the NCAA selection committee by copying MVC

    The Sun Belt will announce Monday afternoon that it will demand all of its teams, beginning in the 2011-12 season, to play non-conference games against teams that have a three-year combined power rating that is within the top 150 or if that school finished with an RPI inside the top 150 in the previous season.

    The Sun Belt will also forbid teams from playing non-Division I games and will stress that the member schools should average at least the national average of 5,038 fans a game. The Sun Belt had only one member average 5,000 fans a game over the last five seasons. The league will announce that it will aid in helping to promote attendance as best as it can.

    After years of feeling disrespected by the NCAA tournament selection and seeding process, the Sun Belt Conference is trying a drastic scheduling maneuver to enhance its chances to be more palatable to the committee in March.


    This policy is almost identical to the policy adopted by the MVC several years ago that lead the MVC to make a significant jump in conference RPI. However, this ESPN article never mentions the MVC experience.

    Note the part about how it worked before..
    "The Sun Belt tried this mechanism once before from 2003 to 2005 and the league's RPI went to No. 12 in 2005."

      The Sun Belt should be much better than #23. Good for them.

      Someone needs to learn how to write articles at ESPN. Non-con scheduling improves the RPI of your opponents, therefore improving your own SoS. If the conference bands together to improve SoS, each individual "independent" school improves their RPI.

        Scheduling is one thing but the attendance is something completely different. Most of those schools.. New Orleans, Louisiana L are not exactly in hot beds for basketball. I would be shocked if New Orleans could get 5000 with free tickets.

          New Orleans is out of the Sunbelt, and is in the process of transitioning from D-1 to D-3.

            MVC should get back to copying itself in this regard.

            This could also conveniently open up a couple of games for Bradley with top Sun Belt programs...

              A long-term series with Western Kentucky would have much value. For both schools.

                  Yeah, I saw it. I think it's a nice move, but not enough. I think the SOS 150 or bust rule should return. I don't remember now, when we had that rule what was the penalty for not making the requirement?

                      John Brady, head coach at Sunbelt member Arkansas State, has quickly come out against this new policy-

                      Brady, a former coach at LSU, has been known to prefer easy non-conference schedules.
