It may be too long ago for some of our younger members to remember, but hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is also what Loyola Marymount college star Hank Gathers died from in 1990.

In many cases this disease can only be diagnosed by a diagnostic study called an echocardiogram...
and there are people who say all high level (pro, college, etc..) athletes should have one, but
the obvious problem is the cost and logistics of screening literally tens of thousands and maybe millions of athletes...
Some argue it should just be recommended and made voluntary...

Logistically it isn't possible, and it's not cost-effective (money could be better spent on other protective equipment/devices). Especially since an ECG won't always detect it. It's an overall rare condition and gets a lot of publicity b/c someone seemingly healthy dies suddenly.

Sad news for his family, friends, team, etc.
JL are not respunsible foor the string of injunrys....

Very sad. Seems strange that it happened while he was just watching tv. I don't know much about it, but I thought that a heart attack from that type of condition usually happens during strenuous exercise, as with Gathers and Reggie Lewis.

An updated story today has the coroner saying that his condition was hereditary. His family now remembers an Aunt that died real young from this condition. They likely never thought of it at first considering most early heart hereditary heart conditions come directly from the parents.

He mentioned that he was tired late that night when on the phone with his mom and quite possibly could of had other symptoms but just didn't mention it as he thought it was probably just a little ache.

Drug tests will be back in 10 days to see if any chemicals accelerated the condition.
