  • Renaissance Coliseum

Just got back from the new Athletic Center naming ceremony............

    RENAISSANCE COLOSSEUM

What are your thoughts on the name? Of everyone else in the Basketball Band, I'm the only one who seems to have a half way positive view on the name.

I sorta understand the name based on the campaign, and there are not many local coliseums so I kinda like that

But seems overall generic and not catchy or endearing

It's not what I think of when I think of 'Colosseum', but given university leadership's desire to create some sort of elitist aura around the university, the name doesn't surprise me. I don't have a problem with it. It will change as soon as there's new leadership, or more likely when someone purchases the naming rights.
      Onward and Upward!

Nice ceremony at the dedication of the new arena. I did not know a new name was going to be announced. As sousaman said, it is now known as the Bradley Renaissance Coliseum. The name comes from the Campaign for a Bradley Renaissance, the $150 million development campaign from which the arena and entire athletic facility was built.
Bradley is a top-ranked, private, university in Peoria, Illinois, providing 5,400 students resources not found at small colleges, and more personalized experiences than large universities. More than 185 academic programs are offered including business, communications, education, engineering, fine and performing arts, health sciences, liberal arts and sciences, and technology.

        Video stream of the dedication-

Note the ceremonial "first basket" of the new arena - it starts just after the 44:30 mark of the video stream, and runs until Raisa Taylor makes a layup at about the 46:00 point. Nice job by Dave Snell on the video productions!

        The speakers are-
        Dave Snell
Gerald Shaheen, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Campain for a Bradley Renaissance
        Joanne Glasser, Esq., President
Dr. Michael Cross, Director of Athletics
Ms. Kourtnie Janson ('12), Braves Council President
Mr. Nick Swiatkowski ('12), Student Body President

Everything I'm seeing is calling this the Coliseum. Where is everybody coming up with "Colosseum"?

            It's Coliseum.

I was there and have several pictures of the scoreboards showing COLISEUM.

I think the name of the new building sounds generic! I agree BradleyBrave. It is just a matter of time before the name of the building is changed.

                Coliseum is the correct spelling.
Colosseum is an alternate spelling and is the name of the famous amphitheater in Rome.

Now I'm embarrassed for not spelling it Coliseum
But it hope whne someone does by the naming rights, they keep Coliseum in the title, it's pretty epic.

Or just change the name completely to The Thunderdome

WOW what a bad name. The Pit, The Garden, Igloo some of the best names of a sports arena, so many other names they could have called it without worrying about a company name. The Cradle would be cool for CAT since they give us so much $$$. The Tepee There has to be so many better names that would fit for a building in Peoria. Are we now going to change our mascot to a Roman. They can have a huge toga party. OK I like the name a bit more. Toga TogaTogaTogaTogaTogaTogaTogaTogaTogaToga!

It's a beautiful arena, no bones about it (I went to the first game against WIU, and one of the matches the next day). And I can understand the naming is a tip of the cap to the fund raising that the school has done in the past couple of years.

Regarding the elitist aura, I would love for BU to not rally behind being the sixth-best masters-level institution in the Midwest label from U.S. News & World Reports. I understand the administration's rallying cry for Bradley to become a school of national distinction, but it's not appealing to boast being the sixth best masters level school in the Midwest if you're trying to get students from the coasts. It's fine if you want to attract students from the bread and butter of Bradley recruiting (Chicagoland, St. Louis, Central Illinois).

Here is a fun fact, Gonzaga also goes by U.S. News's top list of masters-levels schools in the West. Yes the basketball team gives them a higher profile, but I think it's also like Bradley where they attract primarily from that part of the country as well (Pacific Northwest).

Stuff like the speech team, new concentrations/majors at Slane (sports communication and new stuff in the interactive media department) or the chance to earn a dual Engineering/Business degree should definitely be played.

I like the name. As it starts to get used, I would imagine most people will drop the Renaissance part and refer to it as the Coliseum which is a great, classic sports name for a venue.

How long before people start shortening the name to "Re-Co" and is that a good thing?
