Tonite is what I consider the kickoff to the Hoops season for many area BU/Illini fans with the (guessing here) 12th annual ISC Smoker at the Lariat Club. What started out as a small gathering of fans and coaches I believe held at Alexanders Steakhouse has grown into one of the hottest tickets in town.
Approx. 22 tables of 10 are usually sold out in advance for tonites event featuring BU/Illini head coaches and a panel of local sportwriters for a bit of Q and A from the panel and the crowd.
From what I here this year ALMOST didn't happen as far as Bruce Weber is concerned. He was going to pass this year but after some persuasion will be here again.
Its a great evening with some serious insight, fun and one liners that often leave the crowd in stitches.
Cocktails and Appetizers start the evening...followed by the panel asking questions then its opened up to the audience.
The tickets are even in more demand it seems since the event went smokeless a few years back. Never forget Selfs second trip to the event when he told the crowd his wife made him strip before he came in the house and he threw away a $900 suit so the next year he showed up in a 35$ K-mart jacket.
Theobold and Mo used to have some nice go-rounds also. Les and Weber have never dissapointed.
Looking forward to the evening.....with the Illini's heralded recruting class....the Vegas BU victory of Illinois and the Illinois/SIU game this year their should be plenty of good fodder for the fans.
