  • Chicago is ranked #1 sports City by Sporting News

sure to spark some debate.....but given how pro sports & football seem to rule in this ranking..Peoria fared OK......

    Boston is #2
    Champaign-Urbana is #102
    Normal #147
Peoria #148 (17 spots behind Muncie and 7 spots behind Kingston, RI?
and hard to believe Wichita is #143, behind such obscure places as Ithaca, NY and Moraga, CA

Terre Haute #158 ?? ahead of Carbondale, Albany, & Niagara??

    Yakima is #402

Can I say SF is not a great sports town. There are pockets but it does not come close to most metropolitan areas east of the Rockies.

I can say the weather and geography makes SF hard to be a true sports town. It's too easy most of the year to head out doors and play instead of sitting on a couch and watching games. I'd have to bet same is true for most areas with decent weather.

BTW...B4L so many curves and I have no breaks!

Great article about Chicago sports. Check out page 30 as they talk about the Super 7 college basketball players. The U of I's Demetri McCamey and our own Sam Maniscalco get mentioned. Also Dave Corzine tells a funny story about Coach Ray Meyer.

This list is comical. Phoenix is a terrible sports town. No one cares until the team is in the playoffs, and for Phoenix teams, that's not very often...

Biggest sports in Phoenix are golf, hiking, fishing, and biking! Along with outdoor swimming, running/jogging/walking, mountain climbing, tennis, pickleball, softball.

              Year around too!

College and Pro Sports teams NEED to be successful here in Phoenix to interest/draw the 'doers' to become 'watchers'.....

I can't say I blame people, I'm sitting here watching football and I feel guilty that I'm not out riding my bike (a hobby I picked up because it is so nice here in AZ).

I'm in Mesa and Pinetop almost half the year and I can't agree with you. The Cards were in the Super Bowl 2 years ago and won a game in the playoffs last season. The Suns, even though I'm not a big fan of theirs, are usually in the playoffs. The D'Backs are a different story and who cares about hockey and the Coyotes.

You're making my point for me... the Cards were contenders the last few years and no one even cares this year as a whole, it's really bad. And making the NBA playoffs just means your in the top 2/3 of the league, congrats. My point isn't that the teams don't win though, please read my post, it's that no one cares.

I reread your post and you made the comment that their teams don't make the playoffs very often. Am I right? You didn't mention originally how many teams make the playoffs so it was no big deal for the Suns to make it every season. Was the Sporting News story about how fans care about their teams or that the cities have so many sporting events they can attend? I didn't read the article, so I don't know.
