  • Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel visits Des Moines-MVC

Has anyone seen this show?- Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel.
Tonight it is relevant to MVC fans.
I have seen it a couple times, and it features host Adam Richman trying to eat an oversized meal in an alloted time period at restaurants around the country that feature mega-meals.
Tonight at 8:00 pm (CDT) is a show from Jethro's BBQ in Des Moines. It is a restaurant just a couple blocks from the Knapp Center that many Bradley fans have visited before games at Drake.
There are also re-runs of earlier programs that start at 4:30 pm (CDT) and run until the regular

Here is a promo for the show from YouTube. The host tries to finish a huge sandwich called the Adam Emmenecker-
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

BTW- Big Mike might stand a chance with this meal, but I wouldn't come close.

This is a great show! I watch it as often as possible, and they are all entertaining.

I would love to visit some of the places they've been to eat. Indy was also one of their recent stops.

From what I've heard, Adam Emmenecker himself will be on the show tonight, and they did some filming on Drake's campus.

I love the show, and watch it regularly, but they really didn't do a good job of picking places in Des Moines. They're visiting a bar downtown called the "High Life Lounge" that serves what is essentially school cafeteria food from the '60s and '70s....sloppy joes, tater tots, fish sticks, etc. They also serve only beers that have existed from the 70s and earlier. It's an ok place, but hardly a pig-out spot, and not somewhere that many Des Moinesians would pick as a top spot to eat.

They're also visiting a place called Black Market Pizza in Ankeny, that almost nobody I know had ever heard of, even those who live in Ankeny (Des Moines suburb). Not only that, but the place has closed since the show filmed! That might be a first....Man v Food featuring a place that isn't even open by the time the show airs! There is another Black Market Pizza in Ames, but my daughter who goes to school up there says it's terrible.

Jethro's is ok, but there are much better BBQ places in town. I like that they picked Jethro's because I know Drake will get a mention.

the guy doesn't often eat very good food ...just good tasting food...
but for the sake of making a living in his niche on TV, he's kinda setting himself up for massive heart attack...
I have seen episodes where he eats 12-patty hamburgers, pounds of French fries, massive meat-loaded pizzas, and tons of deep fat fried things...
Those kinds of meals are probably OK once in a while, but unless he's inducing himself to unload all he eats once the camera stop rolling, then he's gotta be consuming 500 grams of fat every week!

Adam, the host has a much heavier face now than the first episodes....the quantity of food does get to him.

Its still a fun show. There was a Springfield episode where he sampled a Cozy Dog and a horseshoe before a chili challenge.

I usually enjoy Man v Food. It introduced me to Pappy's down in St. Louis.

Adam Richman is basically a vegetarian away from the show. You can definately tell the shows that are shot at the beginning or end of the season.

For someone who likes just plain food this show both disgusts me yet fasinates me. His favorite places to visit seems to be places that have the hottest wings that you can imagine. I think he goes to these places to clean out his system. Why anyone would subject themselves to food that's so hot you start to sweat after the first bite is beyond me.

Here is an article with ironic timing-
David Letterman skewers some of these types of shows (shows like "Man vs. Food" on the Travel Channel, and shows like "Cupcake Wars" on the Food Network)-

                          David Letterman-
"A billion people are starving, 50 million people are starving in this country. They go to bed hungry, but before they doze off, let's watch Cupcake Wars. Does that make any sense?" he asked.

As for "Man vs. Food," Letterman noted that people seem to find a show where "a guy goes around and he tries to eat himself sick" wildly entertaining, while "in parts of Africa, kids eat dirt just so their stomachs have a full feeling."

It does seem inappropriate to celebrate gluttony so highly while so many people are starving. But then TV networks seem to only care about such social issues when it benefits them.
Maybe if we could finad a way to recycle Adam Richman's leftovers?
