Note especially how different this case was handled from other cases we have been familiar with.-
In this Michigan State case-
It happened back in August!
It just surfaced in the news yesterday, a full month after it occurred!
Almost no media has touched the story, just some local Michigan news website, and they had to file under the Freedom of Information Act to even obtain the documents detailing the story.
The documents are "heavily redacted".
It reports that 2 players restrained and took turns sexually assaulting the woman in a dorm room.
One of the players admitted that the woman's story was true! And that the sexual assault continued without the woman's consent.
Still, they refuse to publish the names of the players.
The police recommended the players be charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct 1 — the most serious level of sexual assault under state law.
The prosecutors have refused to pursue charges against the players, despite one of them admitting they committed forceable sexual assault.
Now, contrast that with the case on the Bradley campus a couple years ago when the player was immediately arrested, and police and the prosecutor rushed to charge the player with a felony, later reduced to a misdemeanor. That player was named prominently in the media, and descriptions of the supposed assault were greatly exaggerated. Calls for the player's dismissal came immediately, and Bradley was accused by many of not punishing him severely enough, despite his immediate suspension. The victim's injury was minor, and did not involve sexual assault or forceable restraint, and she even requested the charges be dropped against the BU player. But there are still people who think he was not punished enough, and should have been dismissed. And of course we recall the hysteria by certain members of the media who felt it was their civic duty to demand Bradley be accountable and do more, and label the BU program renegade.
I guess the media in Michigan handle things a little differently. And I suspect the prosecutor is not up for re-election.
