The Wall Street Journal has an article about a practice that is thought to be common among BCS football schools, and may also be used by some basketball coaches, but technically is against the rules. Nick Saban, the head football coach at top ranked Alabama frequently moves players off athletic scholarships and onto medical scholarships. This allows him to reuse the athletic scholarships, and mget rid of players he doesn't plan on playing. Kind of like having a farm system at the university.
