Brigham Young may not be on the move after all. The Denver Post is reporting that the Cougars will stay in the Mountain West, rather than become a football independent and switch to another conference for other sports.

BYU has decided to go ahead and pull out of the Mountain West Conference anyway. They will be an independent for football, and will join the WCC (West Coast Conference) for other sports, instead of the initial plan of joining the WAC.
The worst kept secret in college football is out -- BYU is going independent in football for the 2011-12 season. After a deal to join the WAC for its other sports fell apart, BYU has decided to join up with the West Coast Conference.
The West Coast Conference includes- Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland, St. Mary's, San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara.

The WCC, honestly, I think jumps the MVC in stature for basketball. It's close, though. Although our best teams can beat their best in any given year, their best teams are more consistent. It's close.
Of course, the MWC takes a hit too. I'd still have the MWC about the MVC, but I wouldn't squawk at anyone who says otherwise.
Also, for basketball purposes, we have a clear 2nd tier of conferences (non big-six) rising from the rest of D-1, assuming the WAC is dead:
A-10
Mountain West
West Coast
Missouri Valley
CUSA (sorta borderline)
CAA (if they can ever elevate their bottom 6)
We're sort of seeing a definitive 2nd tier of 6 conferences forming.
edit: I guess you can throw the Horizon in there too. But after them, it's the MAAC, MAC, Big West, conferences like those. Definite tier jump.
