Pool tables AND a bowling alley! Can any old-timer alum tell me what this bowling alley was, was there a place to get food and non-adult beverages?
There use to be a bowling alley in the student center basement with food, arcade and a bunch of tables and chairs. I do not remember actually hanging out down there for any considerable time but occasionally. The Student Union was never at the level of U of Wisky or SIU-Carbondale. Both were famous for some hard core partying.

Yeah I think that I bowled there once and had no problem getting a lane.
Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
If you go a half mile to the east, south and southwest of Bradley Campus, the population is predominantly gang infested & in poverty. Given that the radius is within walking distance of Bradley, you can expect something to happen sooner or later. Students should always be alert when out and about.
However, you should also be happy to know that within a 1 mile radius of campus, their is apx. 6-10 Officers (BUPD & PPD combined) on duty at any time. So if something serious does happen, an Officer will be to the scene very quickly, usually about 2-4 minutes by time call is placed to Officer being on scene. That amount of Officers for this small of population is wayyyyy above average.
Some other more popular campuses in rough areas is the University of Chicago, not terribly far from the CPD Englewood district, which is most crime ridden beat in the US. Also USC isn't to far from some rough LAPD Newton division hoods.
As Jason mentions, a lot of the crime is caused by the people who live near campus and prey on students. There are usually multiple muggings a year within sight of academic buildings and the dorms. This type of crime is different than the usual drunken antics that happen at any college on a given weekend.
Most of it doesn't really get mentioned in the PJ Star (cause in a big town, these kind of crimes are not news), but if you look at the Scout online, they cover it quite a bit. This link go to their end-of-the-year wrap-up and the #1 story was crime.
My senior year there was a string of car break-ins around St. James apartments. That led to the fencing-up of one of the entrances into St. James that bordered the not so great neighborhood. Everyone thought it was to keep the people from that neighborhood from walking through and looking for cars to break into. You can only walk or drive into St. James in 2 places now on the side that faces the campus. I know there was talk of video cameras around some parking, but I don't know if it ever happened.
This whole list sounds like a bunch of Ca-rap! I never even heard of the Forbes list before, though I guess they are the only one that ranks all schools in one single list. But I agree with others that the annual U.S. News rankings are much more reputable.
