  • Missouri State player to miss entire 2010-2011 season

Keith Pickens will miss the entire 2010-2011 season.-
Missouri State men's basketball player Keith Pickens is expected to miss the entire 2010-11 season after undergoing emergency knee surgery in his hometown of St. Louis.
Pickens, who will be a sophomore for the Bears, ruptured his left patellar tendon while doing off-season conditioning last week. Surgery to repair the tendon was successful, but will require approximately 12 months from which to recover, according to the Missouri State Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services staff.

Another Missouri State sophomore, Michael Porter, was seriously injured in an auto accident in June, and there may be concern he also could not be ready to return to play for the 2010-2011 season.

    Bad news...Bears.
I'm not sure who will be their starting PG now. This could really hurt them.
I was expecting Pickens to improve and play a big role for them.
Definitely won't be pickens them to win the Valley now.

Aren't they down a scholarship because of the APR? I believe their penalty got moved up a year when Jones left.

Pick was more of a 3 for us...Nafis Ricks will start at PG

Hurts our depth at wing but we have 2 frosh ready to step in especially Nathan Scheer

Yes we only have 12 for this year and probably down to 11 because Porter will not be in the mix.

                As I said...

He hasn't been cleared to play basketball yet but was getting a 2nd opinion from a different doctor

pretty much confirmed Porter will be at SEMO
..but it's funny how the entire article makes it sound like the SEMO coach Dickey Nutt
has been recruiting this kid to come to SEMO all along!!

"fans ..who were hoping Michael Porter was going to play for the Redhawks will get their wish.
Landing Porter is a nice coup for Nutt..
Nutt wants to sign as many local products as he can..
..Otto Porter, Michael Porter's cousin ..also is being recruited heavily by the Redhawks.
Michael Porter, who also was recruited heavily by Southeast out of high school
.....will be able to practice with the Redhawks."

They also say Porter might be eligible to get credit for a 2nd redshirt year and maybe gain a rare 6th year to finish up his eligibility at SEMO.
Ha, ha...think again...the NCAA NEVER awards the 6th year to kids who willingly transfer -- the reasons for the lost years MUST be factors beyond the kid's control...
"Michael Porter will have three or four years of eligibility at Southeast. He was approved for a medical redshirt at Missouri State,
which still would have given him four years of eligibility had he remained with that program."

Southeast Missouri State basketball fans and other hoops fans in this area who were hoping Michael Porter was going to play for the Redhawks will get their wish. Several reliable sources have told me that the former Sikeston High School standout is transferring from Missouri State to Southeast...

Though the extent of his injuries from a June Car crash are not known, it sounds like Michael Porter may never be able to play basketball again.

Not big...but it forces others to fill roles....as both were among the top eight returning players, and Pickens started 17 games!

There isn't much basketball news this time of year, so minor news like this gets more attention.
However... James Baptist? I liked James, he was a great kid, but I think both Pickens and Porter would have been far better players than James was. Both were 2-star recruits, and Keith Pickens started 17 games last year as a freshman for Missouri State, and was projected to be a starter for them this season. Porter only played in 6 games, so it's harder to tell, but he had exceptional athleticism and was expected to develop into a solid guard for them.

I think the loss of both will hurt MSU a little.

I recall quite clearly that late in the senior high school season Michael Porter got a few headlines for dunks and some All-Star game play --
and people were raving about how great he was going to be...injuries obviously have taken their toll, so now we'll probably never see the potential that those folks spoke of..
Much of the same can be said of Pickens...

Michael Porter's dunk late in Sikeston's win against New Madrid County Central in the SEMO Conference championship game. Porter, who led Sikeston in scoring,...

Pickens isn't a projected starter for us...this 5 will start every game

                              Ricks
                              Leonard
                              Mallett
                              Weems
                              Creekmore

Pick started some games early when Fury was hurt sliding Leonard to the point and started few others when Leonard was banged up.

Porter never was and never will be a guard...he backed up Weems at the 4 and would have played that position for us. As our article stated his main reason for leaving was to spend time with his new child while rehabbing.
