  • How would you like this recruiting class?

how would you like to recruit like this? an entire class of transfers.

"....Iowa State men??™s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg may not be done landing transfers.

Former Michigan State guard Chris Allen visited ISU, which has brought in four transfers since Hoiberg was hired in April, on Monday. Allen was dismissed from the Spartan squad for failing to ???meet all obligations??? set for him by Michigan State coach Tom Izzo this offseason. Allen was suspended for the Spartans??™ Big Ten tournament loss to Minnesota for a violation of team rules. Allen returned for the NCAA tournament, but saw limited action because of a foot injury. He averaged 8.2 points and shot 39.8 percent from the 3-point line. Per NCAA transfer rules, Allen would have to sit out the 2010-11 season.

In just more three months on the job, Hoiberg has already landed guards Jake Anderson (Northern Illinois) and Chris Babb (Penn State), and forwards Anthony Booker (Southern Illinois) and Royce White (Minnesota). Anderson will play this season. White is petitioning the NCAA to allow him to play this fall. Both Babb and Booker will redshirt and play in the 2011-12 season..."

Chris Babb does not have any history of being a "bad guy" or discipline problems, as far as I know, but the others do.

Jake Anderson was reportedly in the doghouse of NIU coach Ricardo Patton a few times, and was suspended from the team once, though he apparently left NIU on good terms.

Royce White had repeated violations of team rules at Minnesota (he also was kicked off his team and had other issues in high school), and was finally dismissed when he got caught shoplifting.

Chris Allen became the first player that Tom Izzo has ever had to dismiss from his program at Michigan State after multiple disciplinary issues that he could no longer tolerate.-

And Anthony Booker left SIU in April after 2 years there during which time he was never happy and was occasionally in Chris Lowery's doghouse, despite Lowery's history of lax discipline.

Good luck to new Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg with all these transfers.
I have heard Division 1 coaches say that a program can sometimes afford to take a chance on an occasional transfer player with discipline or attitude issues. And even Bradley has had some in the past (Jeremy Fears), but we all remember how that turned out. But I have to think there are very few coahces who would take a chance on so many at one time.

The guy pretty much has no choice but to take on players that left other programs because of numerous reasons, hard to recruit this late in the game.

So Iowa St. is like an alternative DI college?

no but it is pretty remarkable how they've accumulated almost as many transfers than the other ISU - who have in the past couple years accumulated half a dozen D-I transfers and a dozen jucos

Speaking of Iowa State........flooding has forced sandbagging at their home arena Hilton Coliseum!!

Just two years ago flooding did the exact same thing...

McDermott left the program surprisingly worse off then he got it which is quite the feat considering Greg inherited like four players when he started. ISU has three returning scholarship players. Three. Two are seniors and one is a junior. We had a recruiting class in place that included a JUCO guard and four freshman. Of the four freshman, two were spring signees and one is very likely to not qualify and the other may be having problems. So Fred was looking at a 2011-12 roster that he inherited from Greg McDermott that would have 2 seniors and maybe four sophs, but probably only three (or may be two) sophs. So his options were to:
-try and sign a bunch of spring filler, kids like the two we did sign in Calvin Godfrey and Eric McKnight, who have academic issues or kids that we just not good enough for the Big 12 but would provide bodies and maybe could develop into role players
-not use any of the scholarships and try and sign a HUGE 2011 class of around 8 players and rely on a TON of freshman in his second season
-try and bring in transfers that could fill spots, had D1 talent and could make an impact due to experience in 2011

He opted to take the third route. The first option likely would not have led to much success. The second one could have worked IF he signed a ton of talented kids. The third option that he chose to use provides some impact players for 2011 that have D1 experience that will allow us to also sign some freshman and work them in slowly instead of throwing them to the wolves.

Babb was a no brainer. Fred loves shooters and Babb is a good one and he was the defensive stopper at Penn State. Solid get.

Booker may be a reach as he did not do much at SIU, but he has experience, the physical tools and the athleticism if he can put in the work and effort.

White obviously was a reach based on his run ins with the law and I am not happy we brought him in, but the talent is All Big 12 caliber if he does pan out.

Anderson was another no-brainer. ISU has three scholarship guards this year and Anderson provides a fourth while not affecting future recruiting. He provides a ton of experience at the D1 level and will help ISU have the best back court we have had in five years or so (though our front court will suck).

Allen would give ISU a big time talent to replace four year starter Diante Garrett in 2011. He was booted from MSU and that obviously brings his character into question but he has never had legal or academic questions, so this move would not bother me much like the White move did.

Fred is trying to fill the roster, bring in experience, provide practice bodies and build a program. All of these players are better than anyone else we could have signed out of HS or JC this spring at the time Fred was signed and they are better than having empty scholarships as they help the team develop now, especially our five newcomers.

I have no idea what Fred will do long term in regards to looking at transfers, but for now, he is taking the best players he can considering what he inherited.

Bingo -- The Mayor is doing exactly what he has to do and he's definitely beating out some others for the services of those transfer guys...
I don't blame him at all for getting the short term talent by transfer but he then has to land some great 4-year guys ASAP!!

For 2011, ISU has two verbals from 4 year guys. One is Elgin Cook, a solid SF from Wisconsin that is rated as a top 100 player by some services and the other is Anthony Odunsi who Erric Bossi from Rivals had some very positive things to say about him when he finally some him play this summer. We need to land a few more solid players to go with them and Fred is working hard on several, but no big name top 50 type guys, just some solid high major type players with multiple BCS offers.

The state of Iowa is loaded with talent for 2011, 2012 and 2013. Loaded is a relative term as we are not Illinois, but relatively speaking, the state has the best talent we have seen in some time, but neither ISU or Iowa are in a position to capitalize as we are both down big time right now. It would help if Fred could land Peter Jok (2013), Wes Staten (2012), Adam Woodbury (2012) or some of the other in state talent, but Jok is the only one I feel good about today.

Class of 99, BS in Ag Studies. Was in Ames Wednesday during the flooding at the hospital witnessing the birth of my daughter. We got into Ames at 2 am and we could not have left if we had wanted to until 7 PM. All roads out of town had flood water over them.

Well, I think it is safe to say we are done adding transfers this year. But I do think we will lose a recruit or two yet to academics. Our scout team that will be redshirting of Chris Allen (Michigan State), Chris Babb (Penn State), John Lamb (Morehead State transfer - walk on at ISU), Royce White (Minnesota) and Anthony Booker would very likely beat our likely starters 8 times out of 10 in a game. Going to be a long year in Ames this year, but next year could be pretty entertaining.
