  • A Truly Bizarre Hire

The Sacramento Kings, whose top draft pick DeMarcus Cousins is poised for stardom....

Have just hired a new assistant coach...
It is a man with virtually no pro experience whatsoever, and no college head coaching experience...
In fact the only head coaching experience he has ever had is at the high school level...

So what are this guy's qualifications?? You decide, but I think he is the classic example of a guy being hired as a
    "GLORIFIED BABYSITTER"..

He's DeMarcus Cousins' old high school coach...

There are rumbles that this is a package deal....
Down here in the college ranks, package deals -- wherein a high school or AAU coach uses his relationship with a top recruit to land a college job -- are all the rage.

I don't find it that bizarre...

Protecting a multi-million dollar investment with someone he knows seems smart.. Also- He has worked in NBA developmental leagues in China and has worked Pete Newelll's big man camp- so hardly a novice.
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

Perhaps no stranger than hiring someone to coach major college bb with no experience coaching, or asst coaching, in high school, college, or pros; no experience with college recruiting; no experience being a supervisor or manager of a business...

Everyone has different ideas as to what bizzare is!

I can name more guys who fit your description than you can find guys hired as NBA assistants just to babysit a player...
and a lot of people who cover the NBA are in agreement with me.....

"in the college ranks, package deals ..are all the rage.
This practice is far less common in the NBA. And by "far less common," I mean I'm pretty sure it never happens.
But, yes, the NBA package deal. It may never exist, but this is the closest anyone's ever been."

"The Sacramento Kings made a coaching hire yesterday that will spur
opinions across the league. ...Hughley’s hire is surprising because he has
spent the last six seasons coaching High School basketball ...also worked
previously as an assistant for several mid-major universities such as Liberty,
Southern, and Wright State. Hughley’s pedigree may leave some scratching
their heads as to why or how he got the job.
Did the Kings hire an assistant coach or a baby-sitter?"

BTW -- Cousins has whined in the press about those who question his "maturity"....but isn't this proof that the entire organization that drafted him also questions his maturity?

Just because it's been done before or wouldn't shock you if it was done doesn't mean it's "normal"...at all.

I find it bizarre that a professional, multi-million net profiting team out of an even bigger industry would hire someone with minimal credentials to satisfy a player who might simply not be proffesional enough to handle his stuff on and off the court. Now, maybe that's the worst case scenario. Maybe this coach is being brought in to make Cousins' transition to the pros easier than it would have been otherwise. But imo, these are professional sports and they get paid for it. Pres. Obama shouldn't be brining in his high school debate coach to his cabinet. Hire someone who can earn their paycheck. If one of your over-inflated ego players doesn't like it, he can use some of his 45 million guaranteed to hire a personal mentor.

Some players are lucky enough to have a relative join them in the NBA. Cousin is really a kid. How old is he? 19, 20? What are the Blazers going to do wait around and have him turn into a Beasley? There is nothing wrong with safeguarding your investment.

This may become more the latest fad. Mark Cuban started it with hiring almost an assistant coach for every player.

But they could solve all of it with the upcoming lockout and institute a 3 year rule like the NFL.

In lieu of blocking high school and young college players from leaving early to play pro, allow them to play in the NBA Development League until they are 20-21...They can make some guaranteed money and have team-paid big insurance policies vs injuries while they play more and develop maturity to play in the NBA.

They can 'graduate' from the D-League and enter the draft when they turn 20-21...No need for an agent out of college to get into the D-League until the player enters the draft..Wouldn't need baby sitters either.

18-21 year old men for the most part need a structured environment. Sending them to D-league where they have a ton of time on their hands would probably lead to problems. I would expect to see the D-league full of baby sitters. I know a few 30-40 year olds if left to their own devices would probably get into some type of trouble.

I didn't say it was normal... and President Obama, while he didn't bring his high school debate coach, did bring along many close allies and mentors to the White House..

Haha, are you really comparing the two? President Obama needs advisors and is their boss at the end of the day. This would be like hiring a Department Director and appointing a deputy cabinet member just to watch over them.
