The kid has been through a lot. I remember there being a lot of press about him and his mother's battle with cancer a couple years back. He left the team then too to be with his family and returned when it was over - thusly, the kid clearly has his priorities in order. From all accounts he is a good kid. Gets his class work done, played well, went through some crap luck in his NCAA career, but in the end to some of these athletes, basketball is just basketball. I think if anything, it should be refreshing to see an student athlete decide he wants his degree, and he wants to move on to what he considers bigger and better things.

Northwestern's Kevin Coble quits basketball

He has to graduate and then receive a release from scholarship by the school he's at, then he would likely get the waiver from NCAA to be immediately eligible at any other school.
Here's were we discussed that rule just recently.............

Its too bad the public has to raise all sorts of issues/questions about this young adult deciding to do something different with his life than play major college basketball. It is his decision. Who are we to pry, or, insinuate other devious reasons for his decision to stop playing bball and move on with his life?
It would be nice for people to just say great career, good luck with your education and your future life.
Kevin doesn't owe anyone else anything, or, have any need to explain his personal life/decisions to the public. He is an amateur....Leave it alone...BUilding for the Future

However, Northwestern University kept him on scholarship the past year and paid for his medical care and rehabilitation with the understanding that he would return and play another year. So I think it's reasonable that school officials might want to know the real reasons why he would quit now. If I was a NU booster who's donations helped pay for Coble's tuition, expenses, etc, I'd feel like an honest explanation was warranted.

Having had a son who was a scholarship athlete, I am sensitive to this subject. Let's also give his parents and family a break...and lay off discussions of what the "real" reason he ended his basketball career at NU....describing this as 'quitting' is also a cheap shot...BUilding for the Future

Maybe it would be a chaep shot if I just made it up, but I didn't.
Tell the Chicago Tribune writer--
Coble Quits Northwestern Basketball Team
Lots of other people are using the same word-
Christina Milian … good read about an illegal immigration crackdown in Nebraska … for Katy Perry fans … knife fight erupts after finger-in-the-butt … a $1,280 monthly Escala…
Even the official Northwestern Scout writer says Coble quit the team-
Stay up to date with all the Northwestern Wildcats sports news, recruiting, transfers, and more at 247Sports.com
btw, note that he also points out how unprecedented this act is-
"As unprecedented as Coble’s decision to quit the team is – What other three-year leading scorers have forgone their senior season for anything other than the NBA?..."
Others aren't so kind like this Northwestern fan who blogs regularly-
Coble pusses out
Funny how Bradley fans are lightning-quick to rip into our players and coaches, none of whom have ever quit on their team, despite Bradleys recent NCAA success and 5 winning seasons in a row, while Northwestern has never had any significant success, and have never played a single NCAA tournament game in their long history. I can see why their fans (what's left of them) might be a little upset about this.

And nobody has called the kid a liar, just some talk about the odd wording in the newspaper article....but people do change their minds all the time.
In fact, one of Northwestern's best players ever, Evan Eschmeyer did exactly that!
Ultimately Eschmeyer DID play in the NBA!!
In fact, if you want to read the weirdest and most convoluted, rambling theories on what's going on, just go to the Northwestern message board, because the people there are pretty danged sure there's a whole bunch more going on behind the scenes.
Here's just one kinda creepy example..
But there are plenty of people who are pretty sure that injury has absolutely nothing to do with this...and that there's a lot more behind the scenes...
Maybe you'd better go over to their boards and caution them, too.....
But, my feelings, it's a message board and people are free to have opinions and they do express them all the time..
plenty of people insinuated lots of things when TCS and Eddren left BU..
And -- if you learn anything real quick in the world of D-I basketball, 90% of the time, what people say and do does NOT reflect the entire story..so maybe some discussion on that is quite valid.
Here's maybe the best summary of what's actually going on..
