it is very unusual timing...it definitely isn't likely to just be something he planned too long ago..
This leaves them less than 3 months from the opening day of 2010-2011 practice and without a coach, not to mention they do have a couple decent recruits coming in...all jucos, Paris Carter, Jeff Jackson, Mark Rutledge..
This timing certainly hinders those guys' options of asking out of their LOI's
One name brought up is Tracy Dildy -- the guy who just agreed to take over at Chicago State -- he IS a UIC grad and was brought in as an assistant there in hopes he might be their next coach...
Scott Powers of the Sun Times says Jerrance Howard, Jay Price, and Wisconsin Assistant (and ex-Bradley assistant) Howard Moore are all options.
He also brings up the name of recently fired Oregon head coach Ernie Kent who always got about half his players out of Chicago.
I would have to think Tracy Webster and current assistants Mark Miller and Bryant Lowe are in the mix, and just maybe Jim Molinari??
A new premium article on the Illinois Rivals site touts all the U of I assistants
for the top spot at UIC...
they give lots of reasons why guys like Jerrance Howard and Jay Price are the best candidates...but concede that Howard Moore is the leading candidate
