  • Schools running out of money

This is a story about the high schools in Illinois but soon it'll be relevant to the high schools and the public colleges everywhere...
they're all running out of money, and looking to cancel, trim, or somehow reduce the money going to extra-curriculars and sports.

Charleston is looking at corporate funding of their sports..
just think of it...their jersey's will say...(Charleston, IL's nickname is Trojans)
    -- McDonald's Trojans...or maybe the McDonald's Burgers...
--or possibly they'll stay with the nickname and become the "Trojan Trojans"..or whatever...

--then when the same thing begins at the college level.... we'll have the...
State Farm Redbirds, or the T. Boone Pickens Cowboys, or the Bielfeldt Illini, FedEx Tigers, WorldWideWes Wildcats, or Nike Ducks......

can anyone think up a few more?? Maybe the Caterpillar/ICC Cougars - or a simple return to just the Caterpillar Diesels??

Reminiscent of the 1975 movie Rollerball -- where corporations controlled everything...
and owned every sports team, so all the teams had corporate names.....

Corporations are not in the best of shape either and are not spending money on pro sports like they use to so I would not be counting heavily on this to happen.

I am in the minority, but I have always felt athletics should be decoupled from school anyhow. The sports teams will be tied to the school in name only and should be funded by funds raised by the booster clubs. Use tax money that is sent to the schools for education to EDUCATE and not to run sports teams. I know it will never happen, but running sports teams were never the intention of public schools anyhow.
