  • Iowa big man ruled ineligible for 2010-2011

    This post is for PTownHawkeye-

Just when Iowa fans thought things couldn't get any worse, one of the few big men on the Hawkeye roster has been ruled ineligible for the entire 2010-2011 season. 6'9" Brennan Cougill would have been a sophomore next season, but will transfer to Kirkwood Community College in hopes of rejoining of Hawkeyes in 2011-2012.

There had been rumors of this for a while, so not too shocking.

Still, it is a disappointment. Unfortunately he has been the player above anyone else who was said to be improving the most in the off-season...lost 30+ lbs and improved agility and footwork as a result. Cougill wasn't needed as much in 2010-2011 as he will be needed in 2011-2012 so I hope he pulls it together.

And no matter how bad things get in Iowa City, at least we aren't in Ames where the sky is falling all around the bball team

Iowa has been hit with a lot of bad news...from the departing of a bunch of players to the loss of kids like Ben Brust..
so this just continues the bad streak...

I still can't help but get a snicker out of some of the stats that come from the "Prime Time League"...the summer league the Iowa and UNI kids are playing in......

Here are just a few examples of eye-opening stats...completely undefended dunks are too numerous to count

      Week 1
Iowa freshman Devyn Marble - 25 pts on 21 shots
Matt Gaetens 26 pts and 6-8 from 3-pt
      little known Matt Morrison (redshirt freshman-UNI, 6-0, 175lb) 21 pts/8 rebs
incoming UNI freshman Nathan Buss 22 pt, 8 rebs, 6-8 from 3pt
deep UNI sub Austin Pehl 16 pt, 8 rebs
incoming Iowa freshman Melsohn Basabe 36 pts/9 reb on 15-19

      Week 2
      Michael Hadley 29 pts
Matt Morrison lights it up again with 34 pts & 7-12 from 3pt
Basabe 38 pts but went to the line 18 times
Isaac Gardner of Truman State 20 pts/12 rebs

      Week 3
      Marble 30 pts
Basabe 29 pts on 26 shots
      Chip Rank 20 pts/10 rebs
      League-wide 3-pt shooting pct was 68-155, a whopping 44%

      Week 4
Devyn Marble finally had someone guarding him and went 3-17, and just 8 pts

Prime Time League games are fun to watch...I witnessed a 136-134 final score 2 years ago. Pure offense, limited defense.

I have never heard of a summer league for college players that stresses defense...

I must say I am excited to see Mel Basabe playing well...no freshman has shown his type of potential...even in the PTL...in several years. Despite averaging 33ppg in the PTC, I bet he will be a solid 8ppg/5rpg his freshman year and hopefully can improve from there.
