  • Missouri State coach Cuonzo Martin receives a contract extension

There isn't much MVC news, but here is one-
Missouri State men's basketball coach, Cuonzo Martin, received an extension of 2 more years onto his contract. He has already completed 2 years of his initial 5-year contract.

Good for MSU and good for The Cuonz.
Great guy, coach, and former player.
I hope they come in the Top 3, BEHIND the Braves next season!

TAG did a nice story with video about the new contract...also a little talk about Michael Porter's injury in there

On another note I didn't want to start a new thread on your board but have any of you seen Nick Valla from Marist High School play. He is walking on to the basketball team here and I was fairly impressed with him at the Summer Pro Am League the other night...just wanted some thoughts or opinions about him

I would bet money that Martin has more sucess over the next 5 years than Jankovich and moves on to a higher conference before most of the current valley coaches. He has been able to take a program that was terrible and get the track righted very quickly. I think they will be good in the next few years. If Wichita keeps getting better and UNI doesn't fall off to much after their run we could see an extremely competitive MVC the next few years.

Yeah...I've been in college for a while now and I'm pretty sure that awesomest is not a word. -Andrew E.

I have only read his name a couple times in reading about prep basketball in the Chicago area. He was a pretty good football player, and a decent point guard at Marist High School (same conference Sam Maniscalco played in). I don't think I have seen any reports that he had received D1 offers, and was never listed among the top 25-50 high school players in Illinois for 2010. But it sounds like Cuonzo Martin was impressed and offered a preferrred walkon spot to him.

Here is a nice article about him after his senior season was completed-

His senior stats: 20.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game, 51 3-point baskets and 79% from the foul line.

Thanks for the info! I talked with him at the summer league the other night and he is really a great kid. I was impressed with his game and he is someone who can play 10-15 min a night in our league down the road. He told me he had some scholarship offers in both sports but decided to come here and walk on.

I am not in favor of extending contracts unless they do not have a clause in their contract that lets them leave for a bigger school because if they do a bad job you are stuck with them and they do a good job then they leave you high and dry.
