  • Bruce Weber & Peoria Central's Bobo Drummond

In a premium interview that contained a lot of interesting stuff...one thing really stood out.....
Weber, of course, cannot comment on recruits, but the Illinois Rivals writer,
Brad Sturdy gives the answers as he projects Weber would answer them...
I guess this way - there's no NCAA violation, but some of the answers are pretty interesting.....

The bottom line is that he says he thinks Bobo Drummond in marginal and would
    make a good back-up for Illinois - that's all!!
    Read what he says.........

-- he says U of I's Bruce Weber & staff kinda disses on Bobo Drummond and has serious doubts....
when asked if Illinois was going to offer him or recruit him for point guard...
Weber has gone on and on about how Joseph Bertrand has really developed
and come into his own (he redshirted his freshman year)..

then Sturdy says this about recruiting Drummond...
QUESTION- as posed to Illinois Rivals writer Brad Sturdy:
"Would you ..take the sure thing in say Peoria 2012 guard prospect Bobo Drummond"

    ANSWER:
"Bobo Drummond is a quality player, but I think the Illinois coaches are
still concerned about his size and perimeter shot. Adding a player like that is
fine, but why not wait and see on some more highly regarded and talented
    players from out of state?

Illinois can get a 2012 player out of Indiana, but they may fill up before that
happens, which isn't a bad thing. Those schools have a limited number of
scholarships for a plethora of talent in that 2012 class and Illinois is right in
the mix with a number of those players, particularly Gary Harris, Yogi Ferrell
and DeJuan Marrero. Doug Bucshon and I will have an update from the
Indiana class of 2012 this week."

QUESTION- Is Bobo a legit Big Ten prospect ..?

    ANSWER:
"I think Bobo's strength is his ball handling ability and strength. He really plays
well on the travel circuit, although he doesn't always play well with his high
school team. He's more athletic than he is given credit for, but he isn't a
Lewis Jackson athletically, although he is bigger.

I think he is a Big Ten prospect, but it's probably a bit too early to offer him
when you are in tight with players like Gary Harris and Yogi Ferrell, likely top
50 players. He isn't a can't miss at this point, but he could be a solid backup
at the minimum. Is that enough? Probably not at this point."

I think a school like Bradley is a way better fit for Bobo, where he can shine
and be the central part of the entire offense, instead of battling just to be a back-up.

Would BU want (or even need) Bobo with Donivine Stewart on the way?

Are we after him and any idea what his thoughts are on coming to BU?

Donivine can play combo and 2-guard, Bobo is more of a strict PG - and I gotta think you don't ever be caught with only one PG in uniform...

Well I think Donivine has abilities of an off guard. I just don't think there is any way you could play these two together. We wouldn't be able to guard anyone. Donivine is not the best defensive player as it is, if he was trying to guard 6'-6" or 6'-7" players he would have no chance.

I am not convinced of that.........

UNI just whalloped everyone's butt playing a 5-10 guy (Ali, and 5-10 is generous regardless of how tall he's billed at), a 6-0 guy (Johnny Moran), and another 6-0 or maybe 6-1 guy (Kwadzo) almost all the time on the court together...

Creighton frequently used Cavel Witter (5-11), Booker Woodfox (6-0), and Josh Dotzler (6-0) together the year before when they won the Valley
Maybe you recall the game in Omaha on March 1st, 2008 - a 111-110 Double OT loss to Creighton in which
Dotzler, Witter, and Woodfox combined for 59 points, 14 assists, and 13-14 from the FT line...but they beat us with that small lineup in a game where their starters P'Allen (only 2 baskets), Watts (only 2 baskets), and Hibma (scoreless) had bad games.

The year BU went to the Sweet Sixteen we often had Will Franklin (6-0), Daniel Ruffin (5-10) and Tony Bennett (a generous 6-0) on the floor at the same time..and didn't do so badly...

UNI, Creighton and the BU NCAA team all had quality centers (BU had an NBA bound center and the Zach Monster).

Playing three small guards with no inside 'stoppers' isn't a receipe for success.

AT & WE have not shown us yet they can stop opposing bigs one on one, or cancel out driving guards. We'll have to see if they can step it up this season or if JP and AD (and hopefully MO) can help fill the post gap at BU.

Just a recipe for mediocrity - like BU and CU last year.

even with Bobo & Donivine - we'd still never have 3 small guards...
we'd have Dyricus & Jake as well as 6-3 Walter Lemon - - all guys who actually play even bigger than they are...

BOBO will be a way better collegiate player than Donivine Stewart... He is quicker, stronger, more athletic, and is a pure point...

Donivine put up huge #'s early in his career. In an offense that allows him to shoot anytime he wants and sits back in a trapping zone to hide his defense.
His Basketball IQ is extremely high when he wants it to be.. However, he does and always has lacked that speed or athleticism to be an impact player at the next level. He isn't a pure shooter, he is a bulk shooter. He doesn't have a great outside shot... its average at best.

Bobo has all the intangibles to be a stud at the next level, plus plays for the best developer of point guard talent in MIKE MULLINS (IL Wolves). All his players seem college ready right when they step on campus.

(Bryan Mullins, Sammy Maniscalco, John Moran, Demitri McCamey, Evan Turner)

Midstatekowitall is spot on. Antonio brings so much to the table, I can't imagine Bradley passing up the chance to offer him, even with Donivine in the mix.

As a Point Guard, his height is less of an issue than it would be if he played any other position.

He doesn't play "well" in High School for the same reason that many players have fled Central over the past five years. Put him in the right system under a good coaching staff and he will succeed.

I have seen games where Bobo's contributions were visible only to those who are really watching...
he rarely wows you with scoring, but it's his ability to position himself, free himself up, use screens, pass, defend, and make the right decisions that separate him from others.
Donivine also has most all these qualities but is also a really great scorer....so right now it's hard to tell who could make the biggest impact....I think BU is very fortunate to get DS and would likewise be very fortunate if we land Bobo

I live in Bartonville and saw Donivine at LCHS last week and he is hitting the weights hard. When we used to practice JFL in Alpha Park, Donivine would be running with a parachute behind him. Besides having basketball IQ off the charts, the kid will work for it and will be a huge success at BU. Adding Bobo would be a massive get for BU, and the 2 would be terrific together. Gotta love the Braves in the mix for all the local talent.

Thanks for the eye-witness update freak. I remember JFL 30+ years ago....... God, I hated those summer practices and games!

Sounds like Bobo would be a great addition to BU if they can snare him.

My comment on teams playing three small guards at once wasn't intended to be an negative opinion on BU recruiting Mr Drummond. Rather, I was thinking BU playing three small guards at once without a dominant defensive center would not go well.

Without a dominant, shot rejecting, defensive center, BU can not afford to full court press either with an ultra athletic small line up, since there would be no last line of defense if the press gets broken.

Having POB and Zach made it possible for BU to turn up the heat on full court and half court trapping defenses since no one was going to get close to the basket if the defense out top broke down...

Hopefully AT, WE, JP, AD and/or MO can become that monster defender in the middle and free up BU's other athletic players to wreak havoc with various defensive traps...
