  • Coaches on the Hot Seat

I seem to recall some people had Jim Les on this list last year, but here's an article that lists who they think are coaches who need to win this year.
    Tommy Amaker - Michigan
    Mike Brey - Notre Dame
    Dan Monson - Minnesota
    Dave Odom - South Carolina
    Ernie Kent - Oregon
    and Tubby Smith - Kentucky

Seems every year people pick on Barry Hinson as being on the hot seat as well.
But he always finished the season strong and silences them.
This year, his team is being picked as one of the

I would think this year's Valley coaches on the hotseat
      include Waltman, Merfeld, Moser.

With the MVC expected to be extremely strong this year...

I bet the 'drive-by media' will have Jim Les on the Hot Seat List after this coming season (going into the 07-08 season).

why do frequently use the term 'drive-by media'? what exactly is the difference between the regular media and the 'drive-by media'?

RUSH LIMBAUGH TERM: They are exactly like drive-by shooters, they pull up to a congested area, they spray a hail of bullets into the crowd. It causes mass hysteria, confusion, mistakes, and misinterpretation, sometimes people and their careers actually die, and then the drive-by media smirks and they ride away, unnoticed in the excitement. They're never blamed, they're never held accountable.

Hmm...I recall some media people demanding Bradley cut JL loose right smack in the middle of last season.
I remember one in particular who by virtue of being a BU alum claimed he had every right to make such demands.

In his 2nd year he went 28-9 and Elite Eight.
He has FOUR more Sweet Sixteen appearances and two more Elite Eight appearances since then.
He is 274-74 while at UK and has been named National Coach of the Year THREE times at UK, 1998, 2003, 2005.

Funny how Tubby gets criticized no matter what he does.
Here is an article citing CM Newton, AD at Kentucky who says most of the criticism of Tubby Smith is based on racism

I asked someone close to Tubby last season about whether Tubby was on the hot seat or not.

He told me Tubby was not only NOT on the hot seat, but that he will never be on the hot seat. And the only way Tubby is not at Kentucky is if/when Tubby leaves the UK on his own.

I need to add that I love CM Newton's quote (the AD that hired tubby) from the article in your link:

"There's almost an arrogance," he said. "That we're the only place that plays basketball. I see the same thing in Alabama football. Like they invented the dang game."

Boy - I sense that arrogance from many BCS fans.

Add Bill Self to that list. If he doesn't start winning some games an do something in the tournament, the Kansas boosters aren't going to be too happy. Yes, he is an excellent recruiter, but what has he done with those players?

                      Kansas is currently 8-2.

They won the B12 last year. (they got screwed last March having to play a Bradley team underestimated by the committee)

They won the B12 in '05 (and got hosed by the NCAA comittee having to play an underestimated Bucknell team).

I doubt he is on the hot seat YET. And I doubt he will be if he wins the B12 AGAIN and gets screwed by the committee AGAIN.

I got a hunch Kansas is gonna win a game this year in the tournament. Then "hot-seat" talk for Self by Illini fans will be g-o-n-e.

With another couple of bad losses will Porter Moser's name find its way onto that list?

ISU shot terribly again today. Porter sure has recruited some more "athletic" players, but none of them can shoot worth a lkick when they are guarded.

ISU's shooting pct is at the bottom of the Valley and here are some of the shooting stats from today:

                        Roberto Fortes, 2-7 from 3-pt
Boo Richardson, 1-7 from 3-pt and 1-9 overall
                        Dom Johnson 1-7 from 3-pt, 2-11 overall
                        O. Eldridge 0-2 from 3-pt, and 11-36 on the season (please Danny Cooksey, help us explain this, you said he was a great shooter!)
                        Levi Dyer 1-5 from 3-pt
                        ISU as a team 5-28 (.179) from 3-pt, 39% overall.
Outrebounded 38-24 because their 6-10 guys are 20 feet from the basket bricking 3-pointers.

For the time being Porter Moser is off the hot seat list, but here is a news story that shows
just how fickle the fans can be.

Louisville is less than two years removed from a FINAL FOUR appearance, and there is growing discontent with head coach Rick Pitino.
They are paying Pitino a WHOPPING $4 milion per year, and a lot of the discontent centers on Pitino's
recruitment of Derrick Caracter who is lazy and underproductive.)

I'm gonna tell ya all on record....

It won't be long before we see Bruce Weber on this list.

Utah was in the 98 Championship - now they are nothing.

Louisville was in the Final4 and now they are unhappy with their mediocrity.

Mid-major recruiting classes with hard-nose coaching at UIUC... Sweet16's will be probable, Elite 8's possible, Final4's and beyond - nope.

UIUC will not be happy with 3-8 seeds and getting upset by mid-majors in the NCAA.

Something will need to be done before that happens.

Bruce Weber makes the list by '08. (if not already on some people's minds)
