a junior guard at Iowa State just left and will transfer...
juco guard DeMarcus Phillips...he's played less than any other scholarship player -- he's a junior from Marshalltown CC
..And if he goes to any other D-I then he won't be eligible until late December of 2011 and will then have just the 2nd semester next year to complete his eligibility.
he was 2006 Wisconsin Mr. Basketball

Anyway -- Evans became eligible at USI after 2 games, but then broke his hand in what sounds like a "Carlos Boozer"-type incident punching someone or something...
and missed a few more games...then finally played in 19 games total....11 of which were their conference games.
His stats won't blow anyone away....especially for a 6-11 guy...
just 3.6 ppg, 2.4 rpg overall, but in the most recent 11 games in their conference, then his numbers drop to just 1.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg...

In the same vein as Darius Smith first being headed to UConn (presumably by some advisors or "agents" in Chicago)..then finding that his talent wasn't going to get him any playing time - so he heads to juco then EIU..
and the same for Stan Simpson -- although Stan might be making the exact same mistake going to Memphis
And I noted that highly ranked Chicago post player Josh Crittle, who went to Oregon then bolted when he couldn't find playing time, now can't even get anything done at Central Florida in their exhibition games...
And there's plenty more chicago area kids who get hyped to death by the powers that be then aim too high and are never heard from again...
Here's two more...
Xavier Humphrey from Fenwick was ranked top 3 in the state early on and was still getting BCS interest (Indiana, Ohio State) then finally ended up at D-II Winona..averaging about 5 ppg..
Likewise Matt Humphrey - 2008 grad of Hales who went to Oregon, floundered, never averaged more than a couple points per game and hit 55% on FT's, and has now transferred to BC...likely aiming way too high again...
Seems like most of the Chicago area kids have a far higher rate of being guided poorly and aiming too high, leading to transfers...ISU's Terry Johnson & Upshaw may be other examples...

you are cherry-picking failures. there's been just as many successes. its no different than anywhere else, certain players fail, certain players succeed.
hell, two of the top 5 or 6 players in the nba are relatively recent chicago players (rose, dwade) and and the naismith player of the year two seasons ago played at st joe's (evan turner). turner was probably underrated. he was only ranked the 16th best SF in the 07 class by scout

Cherry picking?? Pretty easy cherry picking I'd say since there are only a couple Top-10 kids in the past FIVE graduating classes who did NOT transfer and who also met expectations!!
I would challenge you to cite even ONE Chicago kid who has exceeded expectations out of the past several classes.......you have to go all the way back to DWade a decade ago !
be my guest -- cherry pick and name one...
Here are the Top 10 recruits (using the State of IL) or so in each of the past 5 classes...per scout.com
ONLY two are in the NBA and both were NATIONAL player of the year candidates, so they hardly exceeded expectations - and surely Chicago ought to produce more than TWO NBA'ers every five years...
The vast MAJORITY fizzled out in college and MORE than HALF -- especially the CHICAGO-area kids have transferred
2006 - Sherron Collins, Jon Scheyer, Brian Carlwell, Will Walker, Patrick Beverley, Jerome Randle, Carlos Williams, Lance Stemler, Joevan Catron, Thijin Moses, Osiris Eldridge, Devan Bawinkel
2007 - Derrick Rose, Mac Koshwal, Demetri McCamey, Evan Turner, Beas Hamga, Darington Hobson, Mike Tisdale, Brandon McGee, Mustapha Farrakhan, Lucca Staiger
2008 - Iman Shumpert, Mike Dunnigan, Kevin Dillard, Stan Simpson, Lewis Jackson, Brett Thompson, Steve Goins, Josh Crittle, Verdell Jones, Matt Humphrey, Dion Dixon
2009 - Chris Colvin, Brandon Paul, Angus Brandt, Darius Smith, Matt Vogrich, DJ Cooper, Jack Cooley, Joe Bertrand, Drew Crawford, Diamond Taylor, Nic Garcia, Cully Payne
2010 - Jereme Richmond, Meyers Leonard, Crandall Head, Alex Dragecevich, Lenzelle Smith, Brandon Spearman, Ahmad Starks, Anthony Johnson, Alex Rossi, Duje Dukan
I stand by my assessment that the Chicago area kids are HIGHLY likely to be guided poorly, end up where they are unhappy, and flop or transfer.

Hope he doesn't mind me borowing his quote, but this is from an AAU coach that does it the right way....
"Getting players and parents to understand recruitment and understand where they really are at, is sometimes the hardest thing to do."
He tells them the truth, not what they want to hear. Sometimes I think the top players get told what they and their parents WANT to be told. Expectations, are then harder to get met.Peoria Toyota Scion

Collins, Scheyer, Walker, Beverley, Randle, Catron, Eldridge, Rose, Koshwal, McCamey, Turner, Hobson, Tisdale, Staiger, Shumpert, Dunnigan, Dillard, Jackson, Jones, and Dixon have all had very good careers and its too early to tell on 2009 and 2010.
Collins, Scheyer, Randle, Rose, Turner, and Hobson had excellent college careers.
Beverley was on his way to being one of the best four year players in the SEC in recent memory if not for grades.
Koshwal, Dunigan, and Staiger had very good careers before turning pro.
Catron, Eldridge, and Walker had very solid careers and some of the best numbers in their schools' history.
McCamey, Tisdale, Dillard, Jackson, Jones, and Dixon have all started the majority of their careers.
Rose, Turner, Hobson, and Shumpert were all drafted while Collins, Randle, and Scheyer made strong cases as draft candidates.
I don't disagree that we should have more NBA players out of Illinois but the state has been no slouch. We still produce players.

I agree - there are good players but way fewer than we used to produce and SHOULD produce.
You listed many but only the TOP rated kids ever made much of a splash at the next level -- they didn't surprise anyone by being good in college since they were the very BEST.
...but even so after the first few you list - then you get to Beverley, Staiger, Hobson, Koshwal, Dunnigan, Dillard - etc...literally HALF the top "cherry picked" names on the list who faltered at the next level or kinda self-destructed.
I still say - except for a VERY few of the BEST Chicago kids in the last DECADE - maybe Derrick Rose then Scheyer - and that's about it -- just somehow were not preapred to develop and succeed at the next level and beyond
