who really knows -- I have a suspicion BU had watched him and contacted him, but nowhere in the last year before he chose Marquette was BU mentioned in any of his articles..
but then same was true of DSE and DSComment

I believe Bradley did follow him as a senior at Thornton. I don't know if he ever considered Bradley seriously. I had heard he expected to go higher than mid-major level.
There were other issues that caused some schools to back away.Comment

juco guard DeMarcus Phillips...he's played less than any other scholarship player -- he's a junior from Marshalltown CC
..And if he goes to any other D-I then he won't be eligible until late December of 2011 and will then have just the 2nd semester next year to complete his eligibility.

One site lists 472 D-I transfers in 2010....that's almost 2 per D-I team!!

DeMarcus Phillips was the 2008 Player of the Year in Wisconsin, their version of the Mr. Basketball. And Wisconsin produces some pretty good basketball players. 4-star Korie Lucious, Kwamain Mitchell, and Jake Koch were among the top players from Wisconsin in 2008, and Phillips beat them all out for that honor.Originally posted by tornado View PostComment

and missed a few more games...then finally played in 19 games total....11 of which were their conference games.
His stats won't blow anyone away....especially for a 6-11 guy...
just 3.6 ppg, 2.4 rpg overall, but in the most recent 11 games in their conference, then his numbers drop to just 1.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg...

In the same vein as Darius Smith first being headed to UConn (presumably by some advisors or "agents" in Chicago)..then finding that his talent wasn't going to get him any playing time - so he heads to juco then EIU..
and the same for Stan Simpson -- although Stan might be making the exact same mistake going to Memphis
And I noted that highly ranked Chicago post player Josh Crittle, who went to Oregon then bolted when he couldn't find playing time, now can't even get anything done at Central Florida in their exhibition games...
And there's plenty more chicago area kids who get hyped to death by the powers that be then aim too high and are never heard from again...
Here's two more...
Xavier Humphrey from Fenwick was ranked top 3 in the state early on and was still getting BCS interest (Indiana, Ohio State) then finally ended up at D-II Winona..averaging about 5 ppg..
Likewise Matt Humphrey - 2008 grad of Hales who went to Oregon, floundered, never averaged more than a couple points per game and hit 55% on FT's, and has now transferred to BC...likely aiming way too high again...
Seems like most of the Chicago area kids have a far higher rate of being guided poorly and aiming too high, leading to transfers...ISU's Terry Johnson & Upshaw may be other examples...Comment

you are cherry-picking failures. there's been just as many successes. its no different than anywhere else, certain players fail, certain players succeed.
hell, two of the top 5 or 6 players in the nba are relatively recent chicago players (rose, dwade) and and the naismith player of the year two seasons ago played at st joe's (evan turner). turner was probably underrated. he was only ranked the 16th best SF in the 07 class by scoutComment

Cherry picking?? Pretty easy cherry picking I'd say since there are only a couple Top-10 kids in the past FIVE graduating classes who did NOT transfer and who also met expectations!!
I would challenge you to cite even ONE Chicago kid who has exceeded expectations out of the past several classes.......you have to go all the way back to DWade a decade ago !

"Getting players and parents to understand recruitment and understand where they really are at, is sometimes the hardest thing to do."

I don't disagree that we should have more NBA players out of Illinois but the state has been no slouch. We still produce players.Comment

I agree - there are good players but way fewer than we used to produce and SHOULD produce.
You listed many but only the TOP rated kids ever made much of a splash at the next level -- they didn't surprise anyone by being good in college since they were the very BEST.
...but even so after the first few you list - then you get to Beverley, Staiger, Hobson, Koshwal, Dunnigan, Dillard - etc...literally HALF the top "cherry picked" names on the list who faltered at the next level or kinda self-destructed.
I still say - except for a VERY few of the BEST Chicago kids in the last DECADE - maybe Derrick Rose then Scheyer - and that's about it -- just somehow were not preapred to develop and succeed at the next level and beyondComment
