Another record academic performance by Bradley athletes

Led by record-setting performances from the men's basketball, soccer and women's cross country teams, Bradley University's student-athletes enjoyed a stellar semester in the classroom during the 2010 Spring term as nearly 70 percent of the school's 176 student-athletes earned a spot on the latest Bradley Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

9 BU baskeyball players made the Honor Roll, including several with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Congratulations to all the Bradley basketball players, as well as all the other hard working BU athletes. Way to represent Bradley!

Congrats to all our student athletes, it makes me really proud of the players and coaches for making sure they work hard in the classroom as well. Thanks for representing Bradley well. Not many D1 basketball coaches would put as much emphasis on that as it seems JL has. I for one am glad to see it.

Also to have some of our best players like Sammy, AW, Dodie, and even though he's gone now CR on there means a lot. Sometimes the best players on teams don't always focus on grades. That sets an example for the team, and I think we have a great group of senior leaders there for next year. I think they will go out with a bang and I am proud they represent the program! We will miss them when they are gone.

Congrats again to our 9 basketball players on there, and to all the student athletes on there. They put a ton of work in to be able to do good both in the classroom and in their sport. It doesn't get enough credit for how much hard work that must be. Quite an accomplishment, and I think it deserves to be bragged up, these student athletes deserve the credit for it.
 
I am very interested to see the walkons on that list. I have always thought it would be unescessary to put yourself through that. Practice, schoolwork,games,etc. I thought to myself why not just concentrate on your degree. I guess it shows the kind of work ethic those kids have ( I wish I had that gene ).

It shows that your school takes academics seriously and that is why higher ed institutions were created. When you look at someone you are hiring you do look at the institution they came from so the schools with a better reputation have a much better chance of placing those students in better job situations. I doubt if their school wins the NCAA championship comes into play but a few nationally recognized scholars, Nobel prize winners would.

Let me get this straight, as a company recruiter, you would give hiring preference to a graduate of Bradley vs a Kentucky, USC, Kansas, Louisville, UNLV or U Conn graduate soley because more BU's student athletes graduate, or have higher gradepoints, or, because BU's athletic program is 'cleaner' than the other schools' mentioned?

A school's athletic program scholastic success, or, committment to NCAA rules, has nothing to do with post college career or personal opportunities of graduates of that school who are not participants in sports....or who successfully complete their education while participating in sports at school.

Indeed, the only students/graduates who are affected by non complying college athletic programs are those college athletes who don't take personal responsibility for their own education and the personal growth/development opportunities afforded by the school they have chosen to attend. No one forces a kid to go to a school whose athletic program cheats...
 
I think what is being said is that if everything else (grades, etc) are the same, employers might choose a kid with a degree from Bradley over Kentucky because Bradley is such a great academic school.

I know someone who is a dean of admissions for a medical school and that is what he says about Bradley students. He will admit a Bradley student ahead of a kid from most other schools because the BU kids always do well in his med school, and are so well prepared academically for the curriculum.

A school's overall academic rating is something a recruiter looks at when trying to compare student grade points for evaluating different potential employees.

I also agree BU has a good academic reputation overall amongst employers compared to some schools. This is driven by the quality of the incoming students, the quality of the instructors, and the quality of the campus infastructure, and the quality of the partnerships a school has with outside business/research interests.

All I was saying is the scholastic performance of a school's scholarship athletes, or of the school's NCAA compliance, has little to do with the overall opportunites of the school's other graduates. I don't think there is a specific link of a school's athletic department participants' scholastic success, or overall athletic department integrity, to a school's overall scholastic reputation.

BU's athletic scholastic success is important when comparing schools athletic programs in the context that BU has a smaller pool of players to recruit from vs other schools, and, that BU athletes have to spend more of their time involved with academics vs sports. This makes BU's athletic success more challenging. It has to temper expectations of the program until such time as the organizing body, the NCAA, decides to even the playing field.

wait what? are you confusing my stance or am i just really tired?

all I am saying is that I would rather brag and take pride in my basketball teams' performances on the court rather than their grades..........Ned is a genius though.

If you guys want 9th place finishes and 4.0's.......I guess that might be a little easier than a championship?

half of our players are going to take basketball related jobs anyways or play overseas

EDIT: I do realize now that I was just making a clever comment and didn't mean to hijack the thread!
