  • Iowa State hires Fred Hoiberg as coach

Former Iowa State star and former Chicago Bulls player Fred Hoiberg will be the new coach at Iowa State replacing Greg McDermott.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5140900 -This ESPN article contains the following mistake-
"He played four years at Iowa, finishing third in school history in scoring (1,993 points), first in 3-point field goals made (183) and third in steals (207)."
Hoiberg played for Iowa State, not at Iowa.

Hoiberg, 37, has no previous coaching experience. He was the Vice President of Basketball Operations with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and played 10 seasons in the NBA with three different teams after being drafted by the Pacers in the second round of the 1995 draft.

Hmmm.....he sounds almost exactly like Jim Les when he got hired, almost the same resume, except JL was at least an assistant in the WNBA and CBA.

-JL was what 40 or so when he got hired? Hoiberg 37
-JL pretty decent NBA player, so was Hoiberg, both good 3 point shooters.
-No previous head coaching experience for either
-Former star of the school for both

      Obviously a terrible hire.

I always liked "The Mayor" when he was on the Bulls, good luck to him!

Actually, Hoiberg was the star of Ames!

I was living there when he played for Iowa State under the great Johnny Orr.

Jim Les was 38 when he was hired by Bradley in 2002.

Even closer to Hoiberg's 37 then! Thanks, I knew it around 40, I couldn't remember exactly.

Lol. I don't watch it either (though it hasn't been bad when I did happen to catch an episode here or there).

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Reminds me of the Clyde Drexler hire at Houston, and the Jim Les hire at Bradley. All were hired with zero coaching experience. Drexler has only been retired from the NBA for a few years, and Les had been working as a stock broker in California. Drexler failed miserably in 2 seasons at the helm in Houston; Les has had 2 successful seasons and 6 average to below average seasons. I can't see Hoiberg doing anything other than getting some hardcore Cyclones fans to donate for a year or two. There won't be any winning going on in Ames, that's for sure.
                    Onward and Upward!

Once again this goes to the point I make about JL, name a better hire for that program. (If you'd like to, humor me and do it for IOSU and BU)

Was BU desperate when they hired JL? Were they in the same boat as Iowa St? I don't think they were. Not even close. There were plenty of better hires to be made if they really wanted to. This is an old and tired discussion, and not worth getting into.

Dude, the other option everyone wanted is still in the EXACT SAME JOB, If he was so good why did no one else snatch him up?

Just before the hiring of Hoiberg..
this Rivals article suggested Tim Jankovich as the new coach at Iowa State..........but there was a little stab at Jank in the comment by Paul Clark the head writer for Iowa State Rivals..

                            "Tim Jankovich
                            Head Coach, Illinois State

Jankovich is 71-30 with three NIT appearances in three years at Illinois State
and he also has head coaching experience at North Texas and Hutchinson
Community College. Prior to go to Illinois State, Jankovich was an assistant at
Kansas. He's also been on the staff of Big 12 schools Kansas State, Baylor,
Texas and Oklahoma State and he played for K-State in the late 70s and
early 80s. The well-traveled Jankovich is a little bit milquetoast as a
candidate but his win-loss record at Illinois State can't be ignored."

Others also thought Jank would be a good option...

                            More news.......
assistant coach TJ Otzelberger was highly coveted by McDermott and he tried to lure Otz to Creighton...but news out of Iowa State says he will stay there and work with Hoiberg instead of going to Creighton with McDermott.

And McDermott speaks to the topic of what's P'Allen Stinnett's status??

....I suspect he'll try to keep P'Allen and worry later about dealing with the behavior issues........
Recall that Michael Taylor got several do-overs after his arrests before McDermott finally ran out of patience...

Dana Altman has already hired his first assistant at Oregon...Brian Fish who was Dana's assistant at Creighton is now at UO..

I think this hire is about Iowa State and essentially getting "back to Iowa State ways". Look at the football hire, Paul Rhoads... yes I know he has a long resume but he is the essence of Iowa State and they brought him in to be long term, build pride in the program and hope that leads to wins and donations.

I am not huge on the no direct experience becoming a head coach in any sport, but Hoiberg has a long background in basketball and has been directly involved either as a player or in the front office since he left Iowa State. He also is when you think of Iowa State one of the names, parents of potential recruits, will associate with the program. I have a feeling he will work very hard... The exact opposite of Drexler who went to the Stan school of dedication.

Look for my money, I didnt think Les was the right hire when he got hired, but he did energize this fan base when he did get hired. And regardless, of how it is disected, he did coach this program to an appearance in the NCAA tournaments sweet 16. No one regardless of how much one wants to minimize that fact can take that achievement off his resume. Overall he has not provided the success I anticipated, but from all reports he works his A** off and is still after 9 years dedicated to getting this program to a different level.

I have no idea if Iowa State will or wont win but I guarantee this hire has energized that fan base and will produce alot beyond the basketball floor in the near future for the school.
