and why many will stay in the draft even if they are late 1st or even 2nd round possibilities..
it is because of a real serious possibility that within a year, an entire NEW salary scale will be put into place because of huge financial losses by most NBA teams...
Once the new scale is in place (as soon as the 2011 NBA draft) then salaries could be reduced as much as half for the incoming draftees, meaning way more than a million or two less for anyone who gets drafted next year compared to this year!
"If Stern gets even part of what he wants, it could dramatically affect the
rookie pay scale. Even a 20 percent reduction in salaries (depending on
where he is drafted) could cost (Matt) Hayward $1.5 million to $3 million over
four years. Though the Haywards are a long way from dirt poor, that??™s still a
lot of money to leave on the table.
Because first-round selections are locked into two-year deals with team
options for two more years, Hayward is looking at a four-year pay day of
between $8.3 million and $4.6 million (if we can believe early draft
projections)."
