  • Hostile and Abusive Mascots?

William & Mary are the "Tribe"...and yet the NCAA has not hassled them the way BU has been hassled...
Even considering that their mascot was previously a feathered/headdressed WM logo...and they used to use an Indian

however, now they are trying to appease the NCAA police and they're going to a "Griffin" mascot with no feathers
...but note that one of the suggestions they were seriously considering was an ASPARAGUS!!!!

To be fair, they were using the indians around the same time we were, and many universities were, but it hasn't been the case for like 3 decades. I think it is a case that most closely resembles our own. NCAA regulations made them change their old logo away from the native American reference, and much like our recent re-invention of our logo, the tribe is supposed to refer to the unity of the students and their athletic teams. The griffin comes, I imagine, through a process not unlike the one our administration will chose to either do or not do, developing a mascot whilst maintaining our name.
