  • 6'8" MN player transferring

Minnesota forward Paul Carter will transfer for his senior season.
The Gophers announced his decision on Wednesday. The 6-foot-8 Carter wants to be closer to his family because his younger sister, Bria, is fighting bone cancer in the Chicago area.
Her situation helped inspire the Gophers late in the season. Carter shaved his head in her honor, and his teammates did the same before their win over 14th-ranked Wisconsin on Feb. 18.
Carter came from a junior college and spent two seasons with Minnesota. He is on schedule to graduate this spring with a degree in communications. He hasn't said which school he will attend next.
Last season, he played in all 35 games and averaged 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game.

he redshirted one year in junior college, then played one year at Missouri-West Plains, and then has played now two years at Minnesota (2008-2009 & 2009-2010)..
so he only has ONE year of eligibility remaining...and only ONE YEAR remaining on his 5-year clock...
so, if he transfers to another D-I he has to sit out a year so he'd be wasting his final year of eligibility ...
so his only two options would be

    1) go to D-II
    2) request an emergency ruling from NCAA to see if he can get the same favorable "waiver ruling" that Jake Kelly got, then he'd be immediately eligible at D-I upon transfer and then he could start looking at another D-I.

The NCAA should grant him a waiver like they did for Jake Kelly because of the circumstances.

If he graduates then he can go to any school that offers a graduate program that he wants to get into and be eligible right away!

No- that rule was in effect for 2 years, then the NCAA repealed it. Post-grad athletes now cannot transfer without being subject to the same rules as any other athlete.

Should have known any rule which gives a kid a leg up on the schools would be repealed!
