All those HS coaches were trying to do was raise their price to Purnell. He doesn't need those gold-diggers to win there.

Today, Oliver Purnell got on the phone and called several CPL coaches to try to introduce himself and begin building a relationship with them.

Or should we call it "kissing up".
I'm certainly not a fan of many CPL coaches, but I think it was a smart move for him to call them. Don't see anything wrong with it. IMO, recruiting takes "kissing up".
What part of illegal don't you understand?

It takes building relationships and in most relationships it has to be a two way street to be successful.

Here are a couple articles from the Chicago media about today's announcements regarding assistant coaches at DePaul.
Again, these are from today, even though the headlines sound exactly the same as they did 2 weeks ago when Purnell was hired as head coach.
It's funny to read the quotes from the Chicago Public League coaches who act like gods and expect the college coaches to worship and pay homage to them-

Public League coaches unhappy with DePaul
One hundred years provides more than several lifetimes full of highlights, some lowlights, and many memories. Here’s a look at 100 years of the Western Golf Association and the Western Open. …

"My relationship right now is not going to be good with them," said Smith, who has coached Simeon to three state championships in the last five years. "That could change in a month or two months, but right now it is not good.

"They made a decision on what they thought was best. Hopefully it works for them. I'm not in agreement with it, but who am I? They got the people they think will build DePaul up into a national power."

"Me, personally, I would have kept the whole staff," said Irvin, the Morgan Park coach whose family owns the influential Mac Irvin Fire AAU program. "Billy and David know the city a bit, but they can't attack it by themselves. Maybe they want to be well-rounded and go to different cities and states to find the pieces to the puzzle they are building.
"Everybody wants to come to Chicago to see basketball. College coaches call me every day and want to talk about the talent in Chicago. It is the mecca of basketball, and it's going to be that way for at least the next 10, 12 years. By doing that, I don't know if DePaul knows that. Maybe they are scared of us?"

DePaul's new staff gets mixed reviews

"It was messed up from the start, but DePaul had a chance to make it right after the hiring of Oliver Purnell, which was a controversial hire, and they could have brought in some of the local Public League coaches to interview," Irvin said. "That's why I'm upset. They're all capable of doing it. The Public League has good basketball and good coaches."

"You want to send the car, but you don't want us to drive the car. That's a Public League thing. You don't want to hire anyone from the Public League, but you want the Public League players."

"I know they're going to be recruiting [Simeon freshman] Jabari [Parker], and that has to do with his family," Smith said. "I'm not going to help them with anything. As far as our gym, they'll have to see us somewhere else. That may change in a month, in a year, but right now, I have a bad taste in my mouth. Right now, it's not good for me. "It's not Public League versus DePaul. It's personally for me having our guys go somewhere that's good for me and for them to be around people they're comfortable with. They don't know those people."

"The guys we got on the Fire for 2011, they're getting recruited by major, big-time schools," Irvin said. "The guys we have on the Fire want to win national championships, not win a game in the Big East. That's what DePaul is looking to do. DePaul wasn't on their list before, and they're not looking at them now.

"DePaul, they've got their work cut for them. [Purnell] felt these [new assistants] can get the job done recruiting wise. We'll have to see. The door is still open to recruiting the guys, but it's going to be hard for the 2011 class."

Robert Smith from Simeon...now isn't he the coach that was at Simeon when four of his players had someone else to take the SAT and one of them got caught and cost Memphis 30 wins and a Final Four spot?
And plenty of academic fraud was discovered, improper grade changing for athletes, etc...all of which was quietly swept under the rug when "nobody" could figure out how it happened??

yea...this guy is really an upstanding citizen...
