DePaul hires a new coach- Oliver Purnell

Something tells me that this is a mediocre hire especially for a school that was looking to make a big splash with a new hire. It appears that he runs a offense that is a little unique to college basketball these days and recruits players who will fit this system. Personally, I think that Depaul would have been better off if they hired an energetic assistant from a major school who could put his personal stamp on the program.Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

This sounds like a chicken$4!t and classless move by Purnell...............
DePaul agreed with Clemson's Oliver Purnell late Monday on a seven-year contract that will pay Purnell well beyond his current $1.6 million salary he was making with the Tigers.
Purnell's decision stunned the Tigers, who went 21-11 this season. He had signed a two-year extension with Clemson in June and was making more than $1.3 million a year, but his buyout was only $250,000.
Clemson athletic director Dr. Terry Don Phillips said during a news conference he was shocked by Purnell's decision to leave. He said he learned of the move during a phone call from the coach at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"I'm not sure I know what to say," Phillips said. "I'm in a little bit of shock. ... I'm as surprised as anyone."
Phillips said Purnell left South Carolina without addressing his players, many learning via text message and on Twitter before interim coach Ron Bradley officially notified them at a 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting.

A number of Chicago high school coaches have been very vocal in condemning the hire of Oliver Purnell by DePaul. They are upset that DePaul didn't hire someone with connections to the Chicago public league coaches.
Today, Oliver Purnell got on the phone and called several CPL coaches to try to introduce himself and begin building a relationship with them.
Or should we call it "kissing up".

I have long heard stories that the only way to get kids out of the Public League in Chicago, is to indeed
kiss some butts big time and grease some palms...or hire one of them as an assistant...
This does explain why we don't get them and the only ones we do have a shot on are the lower tier, under-the-radar kids...
In fact...it's a foregone conclusion that if you are getting the upper tier Chicago kids, then you gotta be playing their game....and look how it's already failed and backfired at other Valley schools in Illinois who paid the price with arrests, players booted, and terribly underperforming & inadequate results.
Personally, I can't see where the Chicago Public school kids that have come to the Valley have actually helped their teams get successful...they might have put up some numbers, but they have hurt their teams.
also - one quote from the link above shows a little of how clueless the writer is...
"When it comes to big men, Andre Brown, Mac Koshwal and Calvin Brock
are about the best the Public League has had to offer in recent years."
Mac Koshwal hasn't played in the CPL since his freshman season in 2004, Calvin Brock is more of a guard and not a "big man", and Andre Brown graduated from Chicago Leo (which is not a public school) way back in 2000!
If they are counting all the way back to 2000, then Aaron Spears (went to Illinois & St. John's), Marcus Arnold (Illinois), Ollie Bailey (Rutgers), Isaiah Martin (Indiana State), Clay Holloway (Louisville), Tyrone Kent (Toledo), DeAndre Thomas (Indiana), Phillip Jackson, Paul Bunch and many others are better big men than this guy mentions...

DePaul's Mac Koshwal declares for NBA draft, and cannot pull out as this is the 2nd time he's declared..

now they are acting like a bunch of union bosses making threats at NIU!!
"Chicago Public League furious
The one thing Anderson, DiNunno and Fakuade have in common is where they played in high school:
the Chicago Public League. How these moves will affect NIU??™s recruiting in Chicago remains to be seen.
But according to Carter, who is the president of the Chicago Public League Coaches Association, the CPL is not happy.
???This whole coaching thing, it??™s all about relationships,??? Carter said. ???Now, I??™m not saying I??™m Mr. Big Shot,
but you??™re jerking around two kids from Von Steuben. You??™re jerking around Jake Anderson from Carver.
Obviously, all of the CPL coaches are going to talk about it. I??™m not saying we??™re black balling Northern
or that Northern isn??™t going to get anymore kids [from Chicago] but if someone were to come up to me
asking for a recommendation about what school to go to, I doubt Northern is going to be mentioned.???
Evans was not as calm in reaction to how the CPL is handling the roster shake up.
???We??™re putting the word out on [Patton],??? Evans said. ???Northern will never get a Chicago kid as long
as [Patton]??™s there. There??™s no way in the world.???

However...Purnell hired as actual assistants, the three guys he had at Clemson...and he sorta demoted two of the other three guys...
David Booth, Billy Garrett, and Brandon Bailey -- to lower level positions...
Booth is retained but now fills the newly created (non-coaching) position of...
"Director of Community, Corporate and Professional Relations"
In the end they chose not to retain Tracy Webster who was in the position titled "Interim Head Coach"...
despite the threats coming from Chicago high school coaches saying...
"If they don't keep Tracy Webster, they can't come over here to recruit my kids,"
threatened Simeon coach Robert Smith in an interview with ..the Chicago Sun-Times."
Tracy Webster was 1-15 as interim head coach at DePaul.
