Letter from the McCain family

In case anyone did not see, there was a letter published in today's Peoria Journal Star sports section from the Eddren McCain family thanking Bradley for all that they did for Eddren. It confirms Coach Les' side of the story about Eddren's decision to leave Bradley, and acknowledges some of the hardship that Eddren has gone through.
Here is the letter-

Thank you, Bradley, for accepting Eddren
The McCain family acknowledges a heartfelt thanks to Bradley University for their acceptance of Eddren into their university and athletic program.
When Eddren arrived at Bradley University in June of 2008, he was a gentle soul, privately trying to figure out how to deal with the joy of the start of his future academic success without the support of his mother, who had died tragically a year earlier in his junior year of high school.
His mother, who was Eddren's biggest fan, died in an automobile accident on her way to see him in a championship basketball game. During that game, Eddren, voted the most valuable player, searched the crowds trying to see the proud expression on his mother's face, but she was not to be found. His father had already succumbed to cancer eight months prior to this.
This courageous young man continued to forge on, finished out his senior year of high school and strived to continue his life in college and play the game that he loved so much.
The joint family decision for Eddren McCain's transfer from Bradley University was made during the basketball season after receiving his latest injury. Eddren McCain has been successful during his tenure at Bradley and he will complete his spring semester. Although he has made a few mistakes at Bradley he has acknowledged the need for and is receiving counseling that will enable him to continue on with his personal, academic and athletic goals while being close to his family.
Eddren McCain and his family would like to thank Bradley University's administration, Coach Les and the community of Peoria for the extended support that they have given him during his stay at Bradley.

I wish Eddren the best and his family....
just more evidence that those who rumored he was "escorted out of town" have shown they were wrong...

Yep...we ALL make mistakes. Whats importaint is what we learn from them and how we go forward following those mistakes.

Good luck EM.......

It takes a special kind of person and family to write an article like this, everybody is pulling for Eddren to get his life back on track and find a new school that he can excel at both basketball and academics , good luck to you and we will always remember you back in Peoria.

Good luck, Eddren! Glad to hear you'll be able to finish the semester out. I hope you find a school close to home at which you'll excell on and off the court. Very classy letter.

Good luck Eddren, very classy letter from your family. Hope you find your dreams. You will always be welcomed back to BU because, "Once a Brave, always a Brave."

I agree with everyone that this was a classy move. I feel a lot better about it now, it was still a mistake, but I think he is a classy individual who will hopefully get his life back on the right track.

Maybe its a nitpick but the whole "getting his life back together" rhetoric seem a little insensitive and condescending. It seems as though his life is on track considering the circumstances. He made the right choice to stay in school through the semester. He gets to transfer credits to a new institution where he'll probably play ball.

I know some people who have been caught with pot and as someone who was underage, I wonder if the rhetoric would be the same if he had been caught drinking at an off campus party or something alcohol related.

With that I say thanks to Edge, and best of luck to him

Once a Brave, always a Brave. Everyone. EVERYONE makes mistakes. So the kid smoked some pot and might have fallen in with the wrong crowd, big deal... Obama smoked pot when he was a kid too and that became a non-issue... To be brutally honest, with his past I think the kid deserves more than one break. I like this letter, and I will be an Edge fan for the rest of my life.

This word has been used by at least 3 other posters, but I will re-emphasize it:

CLASSY

Nearly every college basketball program in America has players transfer out on a yearly basis. Most of them leave town never to be heard from again. Very few (if any) would do something as CLASSY as writing (or having a family member write) a letter to be published in the local paper thanking them and asking for their understanding with the particular situation. I met Edge in person twice while at BU functions and was thoroughly impressed with him as an individual.

I will admit that he has been a frustrating player to watch over the past 2 years because while watching him, you knew he had the "hands", but the "head" and the "heart" just weren't quite there. Reading this letter makes me want to root for him where he ends up.

Sorry BU wasn't the right place for you, but best of luck to you Edge!

I don't know what is condescending about it. He made a mistake, and yes I would feel the same if it was alcohol related. Drugs is even worse though. I said I think he was classy though, and I fully hope he has a great future. When I say "get back on track" I mean learn from his mistakes, doesn't everyone hope that? How is it condescending?? I like him, and I just want the best for him. What should I hope, he is still making bad choices? Whatever it "seems" like, the only person that knows if he is making the right choices now is him. Him staying in school doesn't mean he isn't making the same choices out of school. I think he will make the right choices, and I HOPE he will. How is that insensitive, I think it is supportive.

Good luck to and thanks to EM from me as well. We all want the best for him I believe.
