Former Drake MBB All American Willie McCarter, 63, is in serious condition after suffering two strokes yesterday in his home state of Michigan. McCarter played at Drake from 1966-69 and led the Bulldogs in scoring his junior and senior years. He also led Drake to the Final Four in 1969 where Drake lost to UCLA in the semi's by 3-4 points.
I moved to Des Moines in the fall of 1968 and remember the whole city of Des Moines going nuts over the Bulldog's that season. The Drake 1968-69 team and their run in the NCAA's that season, were magical, similar to Bradley's run to the Sweet 16 in the '05-'06 season. Hope Willie can overcome his medical struggles.
