  • BU guard distribution - minutes

With just 7.5 months until opening tip-off and stuck in the duldrums of spring training (Thank God opening day is almost here!), thought I'd start a thread on minutes for our guards next year since we just got a commitment from WL.

How would YOU distribute the minutes among the guards?
(Let's just imagine that we have 2 bigs on the floor at all times, and that these guys (guards) play up to their expectation.) There would be 120 minutes total in a game for these guards. We really need to give AW and SM some breathers next season.

Guards: DD, SM, AW, DSE, JE, WL, (MK?)

Just havin' a little fun while I have the chance. It's actually pretty tough to make it all add up to 120 min.

My guess is you'll still see SM playign 35 minutes a game. AW for 27ish, DD, for 25ish, DSE for 22ish, JE for 7ish. 3ish for WL.

You have a great imagination, but here goes:

      PG: DSE, Sammy, Lemon

      SG: Sammy, Jake, Lemon

      SF: AW, Dodie

Milos would be a 4 on this team...

      Sammy: 28 min
      Andrew: 24 min
      DSE: 24 min
      Dodie: 20 min
      Jake: 14 min
      Lemon: 10 min

With this many guards it looks as though Lemon will more than likely redshirt so this would be my rotation with him doing that and possibly playing a bigger lineup:

      Sammy: 30
      Andrew: 25
      DSE: 25
      Dodie: 22
      Jake: 18

That also being said, I would go with the hot hand in certain games so guys like Jake or Dodie could get closer to 25 if theyre playing well...

I'm waiting to see what the signing period begins before entering into this type of discussion. I'm hoping that SM does not have to play 35 mpg. and that we will be able to press a bit more and sub in and out on a consistent bases. SM's game suffered a bit last year because he had to play a ton of minutes.

You also gotta remember, I don't think theres any way we split up 120 minutes between Taylor, Will, JP, AT, and Milos unless Wilkins comes, BUT:

          Here's the bigs minutes breakdown:

          Taylor: 26
          Will: 20
          JP: 15
          Thompson: 10
          Milos: 9

Ya this is what I'm thinking, I'm hoping we get JW and a big I can put in this minutes distribution.

I think we will have the ability to play everyone no more than 30 minutes a game on average. Maybe some games they will go up to 35, but for the most part I don't think we will have to do that next year.

I am more concerned about him finding minutes for capable players....

Like I said, I would like us to figure out how to play 10-11 guys, press and trap, and play more zone, while configuring the offensive sets to the talent we currently have...

Doing all of that will produce good results...

Just look at how together Dayton played while playing 12 guys...keeps everyone fresh and no one loses their legs the last 5 min of the game.

I just hope we don't just play 8 guys like this past year.
I was fatigued just watching them!
Get 10 guys with at least 8 minutes. There should be at least 5 guards that get at least 8 - maybe 6 guards.
Hoping Les finds some minutes for AT/MK.
I'm hoping big things for Milos next season!

I was messing around with this the other day at work. I made two lineups, one with Wilkins and one without Wilkins. You could view that as Wilkins doesn't come, or just to represent the five games he's not playing due to suspension. I'm working off the assumption that ideally you don't target more than 25 mpg for any player. I know game situations will dictate changes, but to play deep and keep everyone fresh I view that as ideal.

                  Points - SM, DSE
Guards/Wings - AW, DD, JW, JE, MK, WL
Bigs - TB, WE, JP, AT

                  With Wilkins:
                  1 - SM (25), DSE (15)
                  2 - AW (20), DD (15), JE (5)
                  3 - JW (25), MK (5), AW (5), DD (5)
                  4 - TB (25), JP (10), MK (5)
                  5 - WE (25), AT (10), JP (5)
                  By player (11 Deep) - SM (25), AW (25), JW (25), TB (25), WE (25), DD (20), DSE (15), JP (15), MK (10), AT (10), JE (5)
Options - Walter Lemon to redshirt if he wants, and you could consider trying to use AT as a "4" and swap his and JP's minutes to make JP the primary backup at the 5. Also guard minutes can fluctuate with the "hot hand."

                  Without Wilkins
                  1 - SM (25), DSE (15)
                  2 - DD (25), JE (10), DSE (5)
                  3 - AW (25), MK (10), JE (5)
                  4 - TB (25), JP (10), MK (5)
                  5 - WE (25), AT (10), JP (5)
                  By player (10 Deep) - SM (25), DD (25), AW (25), TB (25), WE (25), DSE (20), MK (15), JP (15), JE (15), AT (10)
Options- Same really. Interesting that JE's minutes so affected by Wilkins decision.

Sam will average 30+ Minutes. Book it.

I didn't say this is how many minutes they actually would play... I said this is what you target when you plan. I believe he will play 30+ minutes, because we aren't going to be blowing every opponent out enough to hit the planned target in a lot of games, but I think it's foolish to target 35 mpg as the ideal outcome of a game.

Yeah, I wouldn't disagree you don't want him playing that much, but rather that it's a virtual certainty he'll play that many minutes. JL loves Sam and barely takes him out at all. Both a curse and a blessing I suppose.

Everybody who likes BU should love Sam. I'm glad they finally got that ankle taken care of-- it was a night and day difference. He's a great player to have out there, but I am one of those guys who'd like to see us playing 10 or so deep so that our players stay a little fresher.

So the chance that WL will redshirt is pretty good?
Not a bad move considering that DSE and JE would be juniors (and get a lot of P.T.) and SM, DD, and AW will have graduated. I think that by WL practicing with the good guards that we have, he will gain a lot this season even if redshirting, and would be in same grad. class as Donivine Stewart.
