  • Major NCAA violations at IUPUI

The NCAA has slapped severe penalties on IUPUI for what is termed "major infractions involving all 14 sports at IUPUI".

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will receive three years' probation and lose some scholarships. It will also vacate 18 victories by the men's basketball team in 2003-04; 14 wins by the women's basketball team in 2006-07; and 40 victories by the volleyball team from 2004-06.

I think we all agree that powerful schools like IUPUI that have achieved such great success in intercollegiate sports by cheating like must be put in their place. Thank God for the diligent surveillance of our friends at the NCAA.

Usually I'm against what the NCAA rules for in these things, but

Violations involving athletes include not enrolling in a degree-seeking program, not meeting progress toward degree requirements, insufficient minimum enrollment standards and competing after graduating by re-enrolling in the same baccalaureate program. The violations resulted in some of the student-athletes practicing, competing, and receiving athletic scholarships or travel expenses while not eligible to do so.
That sounds pretty bad. Sure, other schools bend these rules, but at least they TRY to bend them. It doesn't even sound like IUPUI tried.

IUPUI vacates all their wins from 2003-2004 - but not 2002-2003 when BU played and lost there...

Anyway - the NCAA has really been busy hammering a bunch of mid-majors lately...

      IUPUI hammered yesterday...

Texas Pan-American hammered yesterday - their coach made (gasp) 44 impermissible phone calls!

      Then justrecently...
they nailed Alabama-Tuscaloosa, Memphis, Nevada, Reno, and also Lynn College and Stillman!!!!!!!
Yet - USC, Calipari, UConn, Jansas...all remain free and nobody's checking!

Where is the justice, when UConn's Jim Calhoun made far more impermissible phone calls, and UConn hasn't even gotten a look yet from the NCAA?

BTW - note the degree of penalties given to T-PA the penalties are far more severe than Indiana got when their coaching staff made 500+ impermissible phone calls and then lied and covered it up!
