Wait a minute! Since when was there a coaching change at UTEP?

I agree. That would be a big step down for him!

I will say this though. Between Donovan and Floyd, CUSA all of the sudden might be competing for two or three NCAA bids per year. It's just too bad another cheater like Floyd would call CUSA their home!

UTEP clearly doesn't care about people's cheating backgrounds. Tony Barbee was an assistant under arguably one of the top cheaters in history, John Calipari.

If Billy Donovan took the Houston job he really should be checked for any use of illegal drugs.

He might be a dream of the AD there but no way in this world does he leave Florida for the dump of a campus/gym U of H offers.

Billy the kid is their desire, but I think he wants to see how things shake out with other jobs... ie in the Big 12.

Floyd though a cheat at USC is a huge name in this area of the world, he was going to get back in just a matter of which school. Louisiana Lafayette was the logical fit, but with Marlin there UTEP was next.

Tony Barbee left UTEP last week to take the Auburn job.
Tony Barbee was introduced Thursday evening in a news conference beneath the scoreboard at the new $92 million Auburn Arena, which opens next season. Barbee told several dozen fans.

Does anyone think this makes Rick Barnes' job at UT a whole lot tougher...?

You bring in Floyd and Gillespie possibly headed to Houston and you then have Floyd, Gillespie, and Drew all in Texas, granted with many recruits in the state, BUT all considered much better recruiters than Barnes...

Maybe his job isn't quite as safe?

                  Wrong Billy.

Look for Houston to pursue drunken Billy, not Eddie Munster Billy.

It really is hard to tell with Barnes. He has done a decent job both with his coaching but also with the recruiting. UT expects a winner, but for the most part the UT individuals have to be woken up around NCAA time to decide if they really give a rats A** about basketball.

They still are UT though and will always attract virtually whomever they want. But certainly in pure basketball competition the success at Baylor, A&M and then bringing in Floyd and maybe Gillespie the pressure will increase.

But UT is still king. I though really dont think UT thinks it ever has to compete for anything with the Houstons or UTEPS of the world and honestly I dont think they really worry to much about Baylor or even A&M.

Barnes on the other hand I guarantee is not feeling very comfortable after that major collapse this year. I think his job is safe but we all know college head basketball coaches jobs are year to year regardless of past successes.

Except Baylor has a better coach, is in a major upswing, and finished higher than them in the conference, and all this after they were basically on deaths door a few years back...

Also, I recall UT having a stellar team with Durant and Augustine and other solid talent yet drastically underachieved and once again fell on their faces in the tournament in 06 under Barnes and just have yet to win the NC or even get to that game with NC talent players...

I will agree with you on one thing though...if the folks down there weren't solely looking forward to spring practice, they may be a bit more than upset that he can't close the deal with premiere talent.

You know, Baylor drives me absolutely crazy as a Bradley fan.

Baylor has been an absolute bottom feeder in both the Big 12 and SW conference for years. Bliss drives the program straight into the ground and nearly kills the entire program in 05. 7 scholorship players and no non conference.

                          In 5 years elite 8.

It is not like Baylor has a history, or even the campus, or even the location that essentially any school has yet, they can go from virtually dead to within a few points of a final four.

Bradley has nothing near that type of distraction yet have floundered within the MVC since 06. I know the whole NIT, CBI, CIT stuff and the whole 20 wins. Reality its not 2 straight NCAA's after near death 5 years ago.

How does Baylor do it and we dont? Is it all Scott Drew and is he just that much better of a recruiter then Jim Les?

Oh I completely agree with you he has under achieved. UT though believes it is essentially wholely then now so to speak.

This is the first year I have even heard any rumblings about Barnes, but they are just light rumblings. Nothing significant. Lose like he did this year and those rumblings could get louder.

Baylor is viewed until proven otherwise as a short term thing, same with A&M. Look Turgeon is linked to other jobs and well honestly Baylor just is not respected. Same non respect is for UTEP and or Houston. Regardless of who is coach UT fan will refuse to respect any other program... They are the golden star for BCS arrogance.

I have no idea if Drew is a better coach but he certainly outworks/recruits the entire Big 12 and that fact separates him and Baylor. But can he continue long term?
