Since the NCAA Tournament went to the current format (64 teams) in 1984-1985,
How many "mid-majors have made the final four...?
and as a mid-major I count any team that is NOT currently a member of the six power conferences, namely Big East, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, and Pac-10.
Here's the answer....
It's happened with six teams, and it's happened a total of eight times...
In the 26 Final Fours in that interval - 104 different Final Four slots....
Of course this year we have Butler, but the others are:
Utah, UNLV (twice), George Mason, UMass, and Memphis (twice)
...and yet some would call Memphis and maybe even Utah & UNLV major schools because they do have a big time budget & football compared to the really true mid-major like UMass, George Mason, Butler, or Bradley
