  • UK goes down to West Virginia

not sure why Bob Huggins didn't put in a couple players who could hit FTs, but
he made it closer than it needed to be....
however - Kentucky goes down despite the love-fest Dick Enberg was having with John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins...

Sadly what this game shows is a highlight match-up of two coaches who cheat and recruit thugs better than anyone else,
so that probably more colleges will go looking for clones of these guys and bring back Dave Bliss, Kelvin Sampson, and Jim Harrick.
The final lesson learned....that the best team that money could buy still has to put the ball in the net...
..and that Bob Huggins is only going to have one team in the Final Four instead of two now that Butler knocked off Kansas State.

I don't like Bob Huggins either, but I'm glad he knocked off Kentucky. But hopefully this is far as he goes too. The only good thing here is that WVU is making their first appearance in the Final Four in 51 years! But at what cost?

I'm glad to see Butler in the Final Four not only for the obvious reason of seeing another non-BCS school there, but because Butler does things right. Brad Stevens runs a clean program that emphasizes fundamentals and a team concept. I hope more of these types of teams do well in the future.

Now, as bad as Enberg was with his Kentucky love-fest, Jay Bilas was even worse! He went out way out of his way to point out at least 20 times in the last 5 minutes about how dangerous Kentucky was, and how they were poised to make a comeback! Well guess what Jay, 10% 3 point shooting and 50% free throw shooting will do in any team, no matter how many paid pros......I mean no matter how much talent a team has!

I have the Score in Chicago on right now, and one of their weekend hosts just offered this gem:

He basically said that the tournament is "boring" now that Kentucky and Kansas are out. The reason being that these are the teams people follow throughout the year, and they are not there anymore!

Yeah.....okay. That made about as much sense as thinking Chicago St. University would win the national championship this year! Are they saying that people are not familiar with Michigan St., Duke, Tennessee or even W. Viriginia and Baylor? Puhleeze!

To his credit, he does like the Butler story and the fact that they are in the Final Four, but his other comment really defies logic!

I know this may tie in to your comment about CBS losing money tornado, and I agree the ratings may be down a bit. But to basically say that the one criteria that attracts viewers is by how many people follow a team during the year makes no sense considering there are still mostly popular BCS teams and a great mid-major team still around. I think viewers will follow certain teams no matter how much they are watched during the year.

Pretty stupid statement for that radio host to say. This was/is a great NCAA tourney. I'd say viewership might even be higher if Butler makes the finals. More would tune in just to see if they could beat Duke/Baylor/West Virginia.

Just a shame that UNI lost to MSU. Would have been great to possibly see:

            West Virginia vs. Baylor
            Butler vs. UNI

That would have been a great Final 4.

            Go BUTLER!

The Score is about pro sports in Chicago while their competitor deals mostly with college sports at this time of the year. If you're an NBA fan, this final four doesn't offer much as far as NBA prospects.

True, but the few times they do bring up the tournament, at least they should know what they are talking about.

At least the Score has a great overnight host in Les Grobstein who has been on Chicago radio for decades. He champions the mid-majors and some BCS teams that run clean programs. I'd tune him in at midnight tomorrow night, or listen to the podcast later on Monday to see what he has to say about Butler's Final Four run and Kentucky getting booted out of the tournament. Long time listeners know he hates Kentucky with a passion!

The main two topics of discussion on the Kentucky boards are
-how UK got hosed by the refs and that's what cost them the game, esp. the technical on UK..and that it should be a technical if a team plays zone in college!
-how they think there's a chance their stars will return and try for another title next year under Cal..

one good thing, though, it a certainty that Calipari won't have to vacate another Final Four this year!

nice column - last UK Final Four - 1998

One thing- Kentucky does have a lot of fans. Their fan sites are the busiest on the internet.
The Kentucky Rivals board (aka CatsPause.com) had a record number of fans online last night- 19,568

The 4 pages of topics on their basketball board include about 300 threads just since around 11:00 pm last night!.

I don't think so. Their previous record was still well over 19,000 online at the same time when they hired John Calipari.

More people tune in to watch the Butlers of the world beat the BS I mean BCS teams , it just makes for a better tour.
Kentucky could not make freethrows or 3 point shots and that is why they lost, they however could make dunks which is not a hard shot for 6-5 and above athletes, Calapari coached teams not good on freethrows, he might want to tell his players to spend more time on shooting freethrows instead of on showtime dunks.
