  • Time To Retire "Mid-Major" Term?

    Interesting read from SI:

What's amazing to me is that after beating the nations number 1 team, that most of the talking heads are saying that UNI is done. That the Kansas press has exposed their weakness. Nobody mentions that they are one of the best defensive teams in the nation or that they faced a press practically the whole game from UNLV and came out with a win.

I can't figure out how thickheaded you have to be to be on TV.

I'd love to see MSU press UNI with that kind of intensity to start the game. They'd be lucky to have 5 players able to still stand by the end of the game.

Nice article. Thanks for posting! I read another article linked from that page. It is in much the same vein but deals specifically with Cornell:

Honestly, though. pretty much every team that plays UNI thinks, they are beatable. Even teams that just lost to UNI. Even conference foes that respect how many games UNI won in the MVC. They always have and always will look "beatable to the eye test" but UNI keeps winning..

We thought that way after our first 2 games. We thought that way before each of our 3 games.... but UNI won 2 of the 3.

Nice article in yesterday's NY Times.

With regard to expanding the tournament to 96 teams, the author has this to say:

"While that may not be a majority opinion, the four days of upheaval in college basketball showed that Minnesota does not need to be in the field. Nor does the eighth-place team in the Big East, or the seventh-place team in the Big 12."

A raft of early upsets suggests the N.C.A.A. should do more to include teams from outside the power conferences.
