  • Is this Another Year of the Mid-Major?

Midmajors are doing very well, and have thrown egg in the faces of the pundits and NCAA selection committee...

Maybe they shoulda listened to us and they'd have seen this coming, as the mid-majors are better than most give them credit for.
2006 was a year of the mid-major, then the selection committee muscled all the little guys out for a few years, but they have battled back t...

    New York Times says...
"Midmajors Show They Deserve Better Deal"

"Doug Elgin..felt that Northern Iowa..was given a raw deal by the committee.
“I think this year’s wild-and-crazy N.C.A.A. tournament proves that there are
a lot of good teams out there under the radar that we’ll never know about,”
Elgin said. “They’re in other tournaments and never got that opportunity.”
‘We have darn good teams that haven’t gotten in.’ ”

..the four days of upheaval in college basketball showed that
Minnesota does not need to be in the field. Nor does the eighth-place team
in the Big East, or the seventh-place team in the Big 12."

It isn't quite 2006, when it was the mid-major bubble teams doing the damage. This year the teams doing the damage were in the tournament via autobid.

    There's work yet to do.

The Big East is 6-6, and 6 of the 8 Big East teams have been eliminated. Only the top 2 seeded Big East teams, Syracuse and West Virginia, remain.

Here is how the Sweet 16 breaks down-
Big Ten- 3 teams- Purdue, Ohio State, and Michigan State
Big 12- 2 teams- Kansas State and Baylor
SEC- 2 teams- Kentucky and Tennessee
Big East- 2 teams- Syracuse and West Virginia
        MVC- 1 team- UNI
        Ivy League- 1 team- Cornell
        Horizon League- 1 team- Butler
        Atlantic 10- 1 team- Xavier
        WCC- 1 team- St. Mary's
