  • Five non-BCS teams make the Sweet Sixteen!

After Cornell and Xavier won their games today, there are now five non-BCS teams in this year's Sweet Sixteen! I believe we had five in 2006 as well, if you count Memphis.

So not a bad haul in my opinion!

Let's hope at least a few of these teams can keep playing beyond the Sweet Sixteen.

Here is the breakdown of conferences sending teams to the Sweet Sixteen:

    Big Ten-3 (MSU, OSU, Purdue)
    Big Twelve-2 (KSU, Baylor)
    Big East-2 (Syracuse, WVU)
    SEC-2 (Kentucky, Tennessee)
    PAC 10-1 (Washington)
    ACC-1 (Duke)
    MVC-1 (UNI)
    A10-1 (Xavier)
    Horizon League-1 (Butler)
    Ivy League-1 (Cornell)
    WCC-1 (St. Mary's)

With most of the higher seeds, the big boys didn't do that well, especially the Big 12, Big East, and ACC who got 21 teams in and only 5 reached the Sweet Sixteen! All 5 had a 1 or 2 seed, except Baylor who had a 3!

Also interesting to note that the MWC got 4 teams in and none reached the Sweet Sixteen, not a good showing by them. I hope they don't talk about that conference being overhyped too much and rip mid-majors for it, they still got 2 wins.

We won the MVC-MWC challenge and got a team to the Sweet Sixteen and they didn't, were we perhaps the better conference even on this down year? Maybe not at the top besides UNI, but certainly from top to bottom it could be debated.

A couple of last second shots from being 1 team left for them though!

I don't think it was the top of the Big 10 as MSU, OSU, and Purdue were ranked high all year. It was everyone else than made the Big 10 not as respected top to bottom. Minnesota and Wisky didn't have good showings either so that backs up the point the Big 10, like it seems most of the major conferences were, was top heavy.

This just shows even more how much of a joke the seed process is. UNI and Cornell were both ranked top 25 towards the end of the season for several weeks, and get 12 and 9 seeds. Yet teams like Notre Dame who barely made the tourney in most opinions gets a 6 seed?

I'm sure Kansas wasn't too happy about the seeding process either!

I don't think the Big East and the ACC passed "the eye test" during the tournament. Rooting against them has been my passion this year!

Actually, we won the challenge and we still have a team in the dance and 2 in the CIT, so should it really be debated?
